BOA Declined

Well, I've finally got the taste of what it feels like to be declined. I applied to BOA for what was going to be my last card with the last bank I didn't have. I was surprised that I was declined. It probably is in relation to my accounts and inquiries which I've had 8 in the past 20 months with an Amex approval last week.

Still, I thought on the basis of my strong scores, high limits, and 0% Utilization rate would push me through. I do have 8 inquiries also I said I had more than $50,000 in liquid assets. Maybe they thought I was lying? I don't know.

Anyway, they offered me a $500 rebuilder card at 20% with an annual fee which I declined.

Should I recon? I'm very curious why they declined me. I have no derogatory marks and make an above average salary. I only took a hit on EX and my score didn't change.

Re: BOA Declined

Sorry you were declined. From what I have seen on the board, BoA seems to do this fairly often - in terms of offering $500- $1,500 starting limits or a 99/500 partially secured card to people with 730 + FICO's when they are new to BoA. Not sure exactly why, as it's often inconsistent with the person's strong profile from what I have seen.

I am a BoA cardholder, and they recently gave me a very nice CLI, which I really appreciate, but I am not a fan of their customer service nor their recon department. Neither seems very customer-friendly in my opinion, and I've never really gotten the impression they care about helping me as a customer.

BoA is one of the largest banks, and when you are large at times the importance of the customer can get lost in the shuffle.

Certainly, since you took the HP for the card, you may wish to recon, but you may want to wait for the letter so you can have the complete picture.

BoA actually didn't decline you outright from what you have mentioned; they just offered you a low limit card. That's been reported more than once on the board with BoA from people who have 730+ scores and are new to BoA.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. BoA isn't the only lender out there, and there are other lenders whom I would recommend much more highly (i.e., Chase). Smiley Happy

Thanks, Hum, I shouldn't have declined the offer so quick but I was so shocked that I was declined then insulted by the counter offer that I closed it out. I barely read it to be honest. I only saw rebuilder card, 20% APR, $500, and $30+ APR. and I was like NOPE!

I have Chase, Citi, Amex, CapOne, Discover so I knocked out every big guy except BOA. They were my last ones. I didn't care about the card I really just wanted the bonus and to be in with the last solid bank as they are good to their customers.

Chase is my all time favorite. They gave me my first $10k limit when I only had a $1500 Disco limit. I'll always love them for that. I think my recent Inqs and accounts in the past 7 months spooked them. It was only 3 but who knows.

Like you said, it is weird that they declined me while they hand out decent SL's to people with less FICO's and more inq.

Thanks, CreditCuriousity! Will do! I hope I'm in the same boat as you. What recon number is the proper one? I've got like 15 different ones from searching but don't know the right one. Is the proper title a "credit analyst?"

Re: BOA Declined

I will search early in the morning if no one rings in with it prior as will be up in about 5-6 hours before they are openSmiley Happy.. I would have to search as well.  Hoping someone will chime in with a confirmed number prior thought has it handy and I don't recall which one I used.  I can certainly find it and will post when I do a bit of research if someone doesn't beat me to it.

edit: forgot to mention mine was a decline all together initially also not sure why I put 1500 was 1k initial approval after recon and then 7400 limit 3 months later.

Aww thanks, CC! You da man! You've given me hope for a recon. Would you take the secured offer if that's all they offered you? I'm sure you have big limits as well so would you have felt it was a regression or a foot in the door? I felt I didn't even want it to show on my account as a small limit so I clicked decline. I'm not sure it was the best decision. I'm surprised they didn't pull TU or EQ too because I thought they usually did. At least it hasn't hit yet. I'm hoping to contain the damage lol.

Call and recon that bullcrap!!  Pronto!  I had a Cap One chargeoff, my scores were still in the 600's and my payment history since rebuilding was with a First Progress secured card (excuse for FP - I hadn't read myfico forum yet) and I got approved for $3500 right off the bat.  No prior banking relationship with BOA.  My income is superb yours is above averaage as you stated.  You don't have derogs - which i had one of.  Only difference I can see, although I know everybody's file is unique is number of new accounts in certain time span and inquiries.  But seriously... not enough to get that kind of rebuttal offer.  Call them - seriously, what do you have to lose except a few minutes on the phone?

Thanks for the encouragement, Dahlia! I think you're right that the absolute only thing it could be is inquiries and accounts open in a short period of time. But like you said it is a stretch! I will call tomorrow and post the results! It is so silly!
