So, I tried to get a CLI for my BOA Customized Rewards card and was turned down for three reasons. One was that I had too many new accounts but the other two reasons left me a little puzzled. They said I didn't have an investment account with them and I didn't deposit any funds with them. I have direct deposit into my BOA checking account for a portion of my paycheck. I don't have a brokerage account with them via Merrill Lynch and I don't intend to open one. Is it a requirement to have an investment account too? Crazy.
BoA doesn't have any such requirement but they are known as a relationship bank i.e. the level at which you do business with them can influence their decision-making process.
I think they have to choose the 3 "top" reasons for a denial and they may have been scraping the barrel to get the 3rd.
The real reason, and probably the only reason was too many new accounts. They had to fill in reasons 2 and 3 with things that might have been 1% of the influence.
I fully understand the top reason of too many new accounts, which they're right but the other two? I shook my head. I may just put that card in the sock drawer. They were scraping the bottom of the barrel indeed! I almost called them to ask about the second and third reasons but I asked myself why bother since I have other cards I could use a lot more.
I hate BofA. I have the same card, and I've been pretty much bucketed. Can't even get a $100 CLI from them, and one reason says I have too many inquiries. I have 4, and maybe that is a lot for two years? I dunno. But this card is probably the last I'll do business with them as a result. And I think they had a website error, because I ended up getting over 30 denial letters in the mail on the same date, with the same reason, telling me my FICO of 760 is considered too low and the factor for their decision.
