BOA Recon Failure

I apped for the BOA Cash Rewards card a week or so ago and got the denial letter in the mail yesterday (too many recently opened accounts and not enough history with the accounts I have).  They offered me the secured version for $500 with a $99 deposit.  Since I have no use for a secured card I decided to call and try to Recon it.  They asked a bunch of questions which I answered honestly.  I pointed out that while I have a lot of new accounts I've paid them all in full every month with the exception of my Freedom because I'm taking advantage of the 0% introductory rate to get some dental work done.  The credit analyst acted like he was on my side but still couldn't approve me for a non-seured card.......

I was declined for the Amex Everyday the same day but I did get the IHG from Chase with a kind of crappy 3k limit.........I suppose 9 cards and a PLOC in 3 months might be pushing it, maybe I'll try out this garden thing for a while :/

Re: BOA Recon Failure

It's interesting, if not funny, how some individuals may snub the whole secured stigma when BOA's 99/500 product is a pretty decent one based on folks' experiences.

Now, granted everyone follows different paths toward building their own profiles, but looking at the OP's signature it's not like another $500 CC would've damaged the recent approval streak.

If it had been me, I would've taken the 99/500 offer to build a BOA relationship. But, alas, the moment has fizzled out.

Ok, how many folks on here have gotten this offer and have seen their 99/500 blossom into exponential results? I rest my case Smiley Tongue

I am one of those people. I was offered a $500 account with a $50 deposit. That was about a year ago. In eight months they refunded my $50, dropped the annual fee and raised my limit to $2000. They are a good bank when rebuilding and after. Now I have a car loan with them at 1.9% and several cards with good limits.

I still have the offer letter.   I just assumed that since it's a secured card it would wind up being stuck with a low limit even after it graduated to an unsecured card.  If that's not the case I might reconsider.  The only reason I really wanted the card in the first place was to supplement the 5% gas quarters on Freedom and Discover.   Do you know if the $100 sign up bonus applies to the secured version?

Re: BOA Recon Failure

I would definitely suggest to consider the offer. Unlike WF, US Bank or Capital One secured CCs, this secured product isn't like that. In most cases, it tends to unsecure in less than 12 months and you get the $99 deposit back. At that point you can see if your card is eligible for a CLI (this will be HP btw, but well-worth it if your profile supports it)

There's been folks who have grown this card to $20K in less than 2 years with decent payment history, good usage, and overall profile growth.

As far as the $100 sign up bonus, that I'm not sure. You can always ask them if the 99/500 has such an offer. Others can chime in on that particular piece.

I appreciate the input!  When I said I still had the letter I meant I still had it but it was in the trash, luckily right on top still so it has since been retrieved!  lol

I was originally just going to wait a while and give it another shot but I'd really like to get in with BOA so I suppose I'll call them and see if it's going to be another hard pull and if not I'll probably be mailing them a check for $99

Re: BOA Recon Failure

Sure. Good thing you hadn't shred it yet! LOL

But I would say this is a sure way to get in with BOA. Now, assuming you get approved once you get confirmation of your funds being withdrawn, it's also possible you may not get the best APR terms. Not to worry. BOA is very flexible with those reviews and your APR can reach competitive levels like your other cards.

You won't regret it! Let us know how it turns out. I'm sure other folks will share their experiences so you have some solid information on what to expect with this card Smiley Happy

Re: BOA Recon Failure

Just echoing Finstar's comments. The BoA secured card is a really good way to build a relationship with them and it has arguably the best graduation rate of any secured products available today.

Mine's started as a $300 secured. Unsecured in 6 months. Definitely recommend.

+1

I had this same thought pattern when I started with Wells and it worked out well.
