Well, if you were approved for Travels Rewards you're in with BoA - why not just close the secured account? 2 1/2 years is ridiculous.
If they close the secured card wouldn't they suffer a drop in score because it's probably the oldest account? It might be best to wait on a graduation to save the history.

AAoA isnt immediately affected as closed positive accounts stay on file for up to 10 yrs post close. Utilization is what would be affected immediately on a closing.

Eh, I'm not even closing my BOFA born-secured card ever, and it's only 1 year older than the rest of my accounts. Some models do score on oldest tradeline, so I'm keeping that one forever as an anchor to my report. 2.5 year secured card that graduates to a unsecured / $0 AF semi-decent rewards card, I'd hang on to until I meet whatever requirements they needed. The collection excuse sounds suspect anyway.

thanks guys. im just going to hang on to the card since its my oldest. i just checked my creditchecktotal scores and all three arenin the low 700s with no baddies. they did send me 3 letters that they denied me for a baddie however the letter states that the report was pulled in early june. i guess they didnt want to pull a new report even though i requested them to 3 times.
