i have six cards adding upto $4k balance that a friend offered to transfer on his chase slate card with 0% interest and 12 months remaining.Slate ,card issued 39 days ago.
my question is
1) can anyone transfer balances to my friends card using a convenience check. do accounts have to be in the same names, eg boa to chase does both accts have to be under my name for balance transfers.
2) if 60 days have passed since issuance of card , the bt fee applies (3% or $ 15) ; is it worth it, do you still get 0%if transferred on 62nd day or must be within first 60 days only.
3) if using convenience checks do you first deposit the convenience check into your own bank acct and then write check or setup payment using your bank acct. i would end up with a hold of 8-10 days on my bank for depositing check amounts exceeding 2k.
Your balances can be transferred to your friend's card, yes.
You can avoid the fee by doing so immediately, but if you miss the 60-day window for that, then you stll get the interest perk until that first 12 months is up.
Make sure y'all check the language of the 0% offer - is it 0% for the first twelve months he has the card, or is it 0% for 12 months from date of transfer?
In the first case, if you do it now you'll get about 10 months interest-free; in the second case you'll have a year. This is important to know for certain before you transfer, so you know exactly how soon you'll have to pay it all off to avoid interest on his account.
He assumes all legal responsibility for your debt, any future interest it might incur, and any affect on his own credit score from having a balance on his card.
He can actually have the transfer done directly, if he has your account numbers, by calling Chase and having them do it for him. He can also write those checks directly to each of your lenders, if you want to do it that way. This can help you avoid check-clearing lag with your bank.
