not to sound like a broken record with other posts...but in only being with bank of america barely 4 months, patience plays off.
I applied for the amtrak card last september, and was denied. I recond it twice, still denied, along with a better balance rewards. rep advised me to get a coapplicant as a last resort. luckily I was only hit with one inquiry.
Well upon approval I was livid. They hit me with the highest interest rate of 22.99 percent. Especially after the fed increase, 23.24%! EEEK!
Well from reading around here and chatting with various reps, I figured them out. BOA is very iffy with short credit histories, especially if you have not banked with them. It only too me 4 months of using my card to get their trust. Today I requested 15k, computer only gave 6.1. Called into analayst and she was able to approve the full 15k.
Why am I saying all this? I too have some student loan issues. I have 3 90-120 day late errors. It is on a teeny tiny loan of $1800 that is paid off. Ridiculous. Well after adding more and more cards its finally stopped hurting my score.
I also do not tell them about my full financial profile. I only say I have $5k in assets. I do not want any artificially inflated limits. They are based purely upon income.
I would also say Recon is your friend. Be nice to these people no matter what. I have dealt with NASTY rude reps before (at chase) basically laughing at me for applying for the IHG and Hyatt last july...patience plays off. 3 calls later I got the IHG approved. So now my chances of future chase approvals should be better.
I would wait a few days and call back to BOA. They have every right to ask about your finances, they are lending you credit. I had to tell them all of those things as well.
I think what happened was you were caught off guard, maybe not that experienced with a Recon, so you can use this as a learning experience. I also would have advised you to apply for 2 BOA products because the inquiries would combine. I have also heard of folks getting approved for BOA Cash rewards and Better Balance Rewards, but having a harder time for approval with alaska for some reason.
Call back a different day and time, and HUCA if its the same person. Be personable.

In regards to credit card approvals, they don't care if you bank with them or not. If you do bank with them you can certainly improve your rewards, but the underwriters don't give one thought to if you bank with them or not. I assume it is the same at all 3 big banks (Chase, BOA and Wells), but it is 100% certain at BOA.
Their customer service leaves a tremendous lot to be desired, unfortunately. And this includes recons. I have a current BoA card but they are the bottom of my list in terms of service.

You've never had US Bank or Wells Fargo then haha. Those two leave give new meaning to leaving a lot to be desired.

right I am saying if you had limited history without a banking relationship your chances are nowhere near what they could be, same with chase and us bank

Haha..... no, I've never had the pleasure (or displeasure) of banking with US Bank, but have heard stories on here. I do bank with WF and have never had any problems, but I don't have any cards with them, either.
Customer service has gone out the window in society in general, it seems

BoA's idea of a short credit history is 5 1/2 years. Seriously.

No, what I am saying is that it doesn't make a difference to BOA if you have a banking relationship. If you do, it gives you no advantage of getting approved.

I banked with Wells Fargo for one month. I received terrible service over the phone and in the financial centers. Every.single.time. I just chose to close the account and no longer use them. These days that's the most powerful way. Complaining really gets you nowhere with companies any more because everyone complains about everything.

How long ago was this? I've banked with WF for years and especially in the last year, every WF branch I go to has an employee standing at the door welcoming you, and the staff at the counter are tripping over each other trying to help you and make it a good overall experience. I've also had phone reps reverse fees quickly as a courtesy when they didn't have to. Of course everyone's experience is different. Sorry that happened to you.
