Hello

@I don't mean to go against the grain here with all that's been said about B OF A, but I have no sad story to spout off about with them!  Futhermore, I just called them recently and the lady was so cordial that I was enlightened.  Back in Oct 2015 I had app'd for the Alaska Airlines card myself, considering the 30k  miles offered just for the approvalSmiley LOL  As it turned out, I was instantly approved for 12k with a BT offer of 1.9% @ 7 or 9 months. I don't recall specifically the short duration of months, but I said I wouldn't be using that offer.

As it turns out, I decided to "park" some monies there temporarily and use that BT offered, knowing full well after looking at the documention that I had missed it. (Had 60 days to use the BT offer)   So I called up the bank (this month) and asked if they could put the former offer in retro, knowing I had only a couple months left on it.  The lady was like, I've got a better offer for you, How about a BT until Aug 2017 with the standard 3% -- I was delighted!!!  (This was for my Chase Slate that was coming off its BT the following week)  She was like, let's get that rate locked in right now and all I need is your Slate # and boom, it was done!!  Next, she says... How about that Comenity Balance, would you like to transfer that??  I was like, how do you know?  Did you do a HP credit check on me?  She's like no sir, we have a new system and it tells/shows us your current lines.  I was very surprised and had to commend her for upselling (the BT fee for her bank).  So I decided to BT that Comenity balance too, since the 0% was actually up 4/2016.  All in all, it was an informative and pleasant call.

OP, I'm sorry you didn't get approval for the Alaska Airline card and having to deal  with recon and not neccessarily with a general customer service rep, but I don't think they were all that rude as your title suggests!   Recon's are a different element and of course you're going to be grilled, since you didn't pass the computer inspection of your credit report. (denied)   Better luck next time as that is a sweet offer for the Alaska Airlines card!

I am very happy for you and appreciate you providing detail which would be helpful to all of us here.  What I don't understand is this;  people seem to have a difficult time comprehending when someone else has a different experience.  The reaonsing seems to go like this; if someone else had a poor customer experience and I did not, then it must have been their fault.   I stand by what I originally posted.  We all know YMMV.   I've been in this credit game for a few years now and have reconned a couple of times with success.  The "grilling" is par for the course but  the credit analyst I reached was rude. I"m not saying that because I did not get the card.  I know that I probably will in a few months and will be sure to employ the information I've gleaned from you.  But, I am unaccustomed to the level of service I received, especially having banked with them for over 7 years.

BofA, they're okay.  Now FIA (somehow related) I love.  I remember I got a 10k FIA approval for a BofA card after recon.  A couple of hours later, BofA called and rescinded that 10k approval.  They had every right to do that, especially since I was totally shocked that I got approved in the 1st place with so many new accounts, two of which were with BofA (prior 4 months).  It's something about doing your congrats dance and then the rug is pulled out from underneath you.  I've ALWAYS had more success wit FIA than a BofA rep.  That's just my two cents.

Man, I'm sorry.  I would have been super disappointed too. Smiley Sad I thought FIA was BofA?  Can you explain the difference?

Thanks

I'm not sure how they're connected.   I know FIA manages many BofA accounts and some here have said FIA is a subsidiary of BofA.  I really don't know but FIA has been good to me.

+1 to OP's post above. I've had multiple experiences with BoA customer service (including recon) being rude or abrupt via phone, and unfortunately so have others. I wish that were not the case, but it is. It's not the OP's fault that she received rude service. And I do have a BoA card and am a customer. Smiley Happy

BOA is very iffy with short credit histories, especially if you have not banked with them.

In regards to credit card approvals, they don't care if you bank with them or not. If you do bank with them you can certainly improve your rewards, but the underwriters don't give one thought to if you bank with them or not.  I assume it is the same at all 3 big banks (Chase, BOA and Wells), but it is 100% certain at BOA.

I would say WF may be a little different. With lower score of TU (around 640) a very fresh credit report with robably 25 accounts within the last 4 months, and only 1 WF secured cc being less than a year, i got approved for Dillards AmEx for $2K instant. The approval itself was a miracle, given my credit report and score at the time. I called in right away and asked for an instant cli, and told them i bank with wf as well, and 15 minutes later, my SL was increased to $4K. WF is known to be very conservative when it comes to CLI's and guess what... just a month later i called back asking for a cli and they increased my limit to $5K. With my credit report i would say it was all for bainking with them, as at the time i was not even able to get a $500 Walmart store card to save my life.

Wow.  Experiences like this make the difference.  I might look into WF in the future.  Glad you got what you wanted!

Thanks abutterflydream,

i had initally got declined for this card couple months prior to approval, but had a big change in my TU in the couple months following the denial. I always like to work with my bank on everything possible, but WF is not very customer friedly to be honest. They did not even give me a car loan and i ended up getting financed from somewhere else for a very high rate. So now i am bout to refinance it with my CU. So maybe i got lucky with the Dillard's AmEx, but i will not be pushing my luck with WF anymore.

Re: Bank of America Recon- Rude

I was going to go with them for my car loan but went with a local credit union at the last moment.  I'd called them twice to get an idea of interest rates but I kept getting the run around.  I get where you are coming from.  Thanks for sharing your experience.

Re: Bank of America Recon- Rude

FIA is a subsidiary of BofA, basically what is left over from MBNA, all in all the same company but they handle cards that BofA services for companies that they compete with directly in other areas (e.g. fidelity, although thats going over to US bank I think?) although you're just as likely to get one of their reps if you call the boa card customer service number depending on the type of account you have and your relationship with them.

Hello MyFico-ers,

I just applied for credit with Bank of America and was declined for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card.   It mentioned delinquency, derogatory public record and collection accounts.  I called prepared to discuss the issues above and was surprised to speak with the know it all credit analyst.   When I mentioned I did not have a delinquency he mentioned student loan accounts from 2012.  I rebounded with those accounts are from 4 years ago and since that time I have prime accounts and an good credit score  (709) at the time of application.  He then told me I have a public record, which I do not and he was unable to find.   He then told me that if I were looking to have the decision reconsidered we need to have a very different conversation???  That he would need to ask me if I had disputed the student loan accounts which I had, he needed to have information about all of my checking/savings acct, investment accounts and other financial info - the total amount of each account...I'm not a computer so when I said my xxx account has about $2500, he was very nice nasty...I don't need to know the bank name just the exact dlollar amount and I"m like well sir, I am giving you a estimate but hold on I'll look it up to give you definitive numbers.  He then said we don't see any major accounts for you  and as I was explaining what I have he cut me off...and asked me if I had any joint accounts and all of mine are individual so he was satisfied with that.  He put me on hold and came back with the same decision.

So folks that's my experience with Bank of America.  Please use this info to help you with your recon.

My experience was pretty much like that. The guy was very robotic, obviously not interested in helping. I got the impression he actually had no authority to do anything, was just wasting my time. I won't say he was rude, but he certainly gave me a bad feeling about B of A.
