CC applications

Hi all,

I am trying to boost my credit score by adding a credit card.   I applied for a BofA card and because I mistakenly used my prior address I think it sent my app into further review.  I recently moved and updated my address with USPS.   If I apply for one additional card right now, will it hurt my FICO?   I've heard that a few applications within a short period of time won't hurt.   What is that time frame?  A day?  Two days?  A friday and the following Monday?

Hi and welcome
There is no way to answer your question, because it's really profile dependent
Maybe if you listed cards you already have and their age, some could guess what/if the "damage" would be
Why do you think your credit would get "boosted" by adding a card?
Unless you only have one or two cards, and/or high utilization, adding more may not result in any boost.
I would not be applying for anything while BOfA is reviewing your application. Last thing you want them to think is that you're about to spree, especially if you haven't been particularly credit active.

Re: CC applications

Credit card applications never count under the "multiple applications in a short period" that's commonly cited for auto and mortgage loans. Every inquiry has the potential to drop your score right out of the gate, especially if you don't have many of them. Then if you get approved, you're dealing with a new account resetting your age of youngest account and average age of accounts which both can carry potential score penalties.

With that said, score penalties aren't usually a lot and the benefit of a new card can far outweigh any short score hit. Unless you're going for a mortgage in the next year (in which case you shouldn't be applying for any accounts), do what makes sense for your finances.

With that said, I would just let the BoA application play out. It shouldn't be too long before you know.

Re: CC applications

Remedios gave really good advice!

All I will add is, did you call BofA and ask if they needed to Verify you or your address?

Since you already applied, I would follow up. My 2 cents.

I've tried contacting them to see what the review is for,  but can't get through to anyone who can tell me.  The person I spoke with today just told me it's in review but didn't know what for.   Is there a better # to call than 866 422 8089?

BTW, I tried the prequal on the bofa site and applied for the card they suggested.

Thank you!  I'll sit tight and wait to hear back from BofA.    I did the prequal for Cap One and Discover and got the congrats with card suggestions on both, but I'll hold off on anything further.

Hope this helps.

Re: CC applications

I agree, Remedios gave good advice.

Anytime you apply for a CC, usually resulting in a HP which might actually lower your score, but only temporarily. Are you referring to a lower util. if adding a new card because that can help your score as long as what’s reporting is your usual spend or less.

Re: CC applications

My app is still in review and every phone # I've tried takes me to the same message.    I just wish I knew what the hold up is about.

Re: CC applications

BTW, pardon my ignorance, but what is HP?
