Hi folks,
I've been perusing the forums here and there over the last few months, and you guys are so knowledgeable and great, I now have an issue I need to put out there and ask for some insight on/get some advice for...
I have not so perfect credit, and have been working on it with focus over the last year. I use CreditKarma, etc, to realluy stay on it. The biggest detriment to my score right now is two collection accounts that are closed but are being paid as agreed (until paid off), and all of my current accounts are current, but are carrying fairly high balances. My utilization is high, admittedly. About 85%. Yes I know that's bad... but I'm working on it!
That all said, I have really been wanting the CHASE Amazon Prime Visa for a long time, and I thought since I had a [slowly] climbing score, 0 inquiries on record, and things were being paid and maintained, plus I have a solid income of about $59k/year, that I might as well roll the dice and apply. Of course, based on my two old bad accounts, and the high utilization, I was denied the card. I called recon to explain specifics, hoping for some mercy. Even with a low limit, I really want the card itself, so I explain I don't need or even necessarily want extra credit, just want the account. I even had two exisiting cards with them, the Slate ($500 limit, $0 balance, 2 yrs old) and the Freedom Unlimited ($1000 limit, $800 balance, 2 yrs old). I suggested moving my available CHASE credit to the Amazon card, but the recon rep said they cannot approve any new accounts for me at this time. He said it was final, and I left it alone.
Fast forward a week, and when going onto my CHASE online banking, I see a green-checked, "selected for you" offer on the CHASE Sapphire Preferred. It was offering a good, specific interest rate (good for me anyway, better than any of my other CC's), and all it asked for was my annual income and phone number. I figured hey what the hell, and I was INSTANTLY approved, for a $5000 credit line! I'm in shock.
Why would CHASE deny me the Amazon Prime Visa, recon tell me that decision is final and my profile cannot allow it right now, but then a week later they give me my biggest credit line yet on a different card? This is very odd to me so maybe you can share some insight? Is it a fluke and I should just count my blessings and treat this card well and be happy? Can I/should I rock the boat by calling recon back and telling them to please give me the Amazon card instead? Or is that a bad idea where they might see this automatic approval I just got and then take it back from me?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this for me, and for reading this absurdly long post. I just wanted ot share all the details. ![]()
If there’s one credit-related thing we know for sure, it’s that Chase is an odd duck. But congrats! Enjoy that beautiful card! It’s a favorite around these here parts.
It is strange, though, seeing as the CSP is the better of the 2 cards.... I would just be happy and not poke that giant Chase bear
I would keep the CSP card.
You could always get the Synchrony Amazon store card. I have it and it rocks
