CU's and Chexsystems

So I had 2 "misused checking accounts" one from late 2011 and one from 2012 both were for an initial under $10 overdraft which I wasn't notified about which eventually compounded with fees turning into over $300 each. They went unpaid because I felt it was severely unfair yet the banks just continued stating its in the account disclosure.

Either way I recently paid both off and got letter from each bank stating that. I contacted Chexsystems they said they received updates and put it into their system that it is paid in full. However about 24 hours after they CSR at Chexsystems stated it was updated as PIF I went into a CU to open a secured personal loan to rebuild credit, not even a checking account. I was declined due to it stating it was unpaid by Chexsystems. I contacted them and they just repeated it shows on their end as paid.

So my question is I'd like to app for an unsecured card with NFCU or similar with loose underwriting and non-manual approval. My scores are around 620. But I think I might be stopped or denied due to the Chexsystems issue.

Thoughts?

NFCU doesn't check Chexsystems. You only have to show proof of membership eligibility(military or Navy League San Diego)

NFCU does not use Chexsystems, but they DO use EWS (Early Warning Services) which is similar. I submitted my NLUS San Diego docs, license, social and all and STILL got denied for membership because of EWS. Couldn't have even been for anything in the last 5 years but they found something and won't say what until I mail them some documents and wait to their reply. EWS won't say anything over the phone. I think it's for a 5 year old SunTrust overdraft of $30 though, haven't had any other checking mishaps since.

OP, if you've taken care of it, you might not have problem getting in. I just don't feel like jumping through hoops, plus I just got an Amex lol Smiley Happy Good luck!

WOW. Really? This is the first I have ever heard of NFCU using ANY check reporting company. Thanks for sharing your experience.

No problem! But yes, that is the reason they gave me for the membership denial. They said I would qualify since I joined the San Diego Navy League and all my paperwork was perfectly submitted via email, but I can re-apply after I get the info removed from EWS.

Re: CU's and Chexsystems

Did you take the letters from the banks stating that they were paid in full?  Those should have been at least looked out and confirmed if necessary by the CU you were trying to open an account with.  In any case, request hard copies of your reports from Chex and EWS to make sure there isnt anything else reported that you are not aware of.  If they wont open a checking account, sometimes they will allow you to open a savings account.

This is true. I noticed on my app that I had applied for an NFCU savings AND checking, when I really only wanted a savings. I re-applied today making sure to request only a savings account so I will let you guys know if this makes a difference when I hear back from them.

Re: CU's and Chexsystems

Sirloring - Yes I brought them and they accepted them.

But the point I'm getting at is that it's still in Chex as unpaid which is a red flag making a manual review necessary. I need an account with no manual review because I have a decent CS (620-630) but I have like 7 baddies from 2011-2013 which if manually reviewed as opposed to a computer only basing a decision off my CS might give very different results you know?

Re: CU's and Chexsystems

Actually low 600's is below average. You really should step into gardening mode. Average is really 700+/-20. You did say you have baddies so that means that you already have your scores being pulled down segnificantly. Most likely the CU that you entered did not get an up-to-date report. You have to allow 2-4weeks for reports to be updated. EWS is actually an enhancement of ChexSystems by the banks so if anything is reported by ChexSystems it will report at EWS as well as additional data on how you use your accounts. Manual reviews are also usually nicer than computer reviews. Computers are pass/fail but people have pass/grey/fail so the only benifit to use computers is to speed up high CS applicants.

Re: CU's and Chexsystems

630 is about a C grade which in my experience means average or passing. It's not good by any means but getting a credit card is possible even an unsecured one in a lot of places (probably with low SL and high apr). I think the CSR I spoke to said 620 and below is about a D+ which would not qualify for unsecured cards.

Most of my baddies are really old (4-6 years) so they have lost most of their sting according to more experienced contributors on here.

I've been declined for 4 bank accounts due to info on Chex but not one bank or CU has ever mentioned EWS so I'm assuming none of them use that service/network.

I've spoken to credit reviewers and they've said they're actually more harsh than a computer would be in my scenario. Because a computer would read my CS and give a decision based on that while a person sees my CS and reads through my whole report then makes a decision.
