Hi all, I'm wondering if there is a way to avoid a HP if I apply for the Amex Hilton Honors, get accepted, but don't like the SL so don't actually open the new TL.
I'm an existing Amex cardholder (BCE and CashMagnet) so as I understand it, it would only be a SP for an approval. After accepting the approval I could see the offered SL, and if it was too low that it isn't worth it to me to get the card, would I be able to simply tell Amex I don't actually want the card afterall, and not actually have anythign show up on my credit report at all?
From what I understand it seems like this is how it would work, but I want to confirm as there is a perfectly good chance it will not be high enough for me to want the card (and I don't want a 'foot in the door' or to grow it in this case).
1. There is no guarantee that a new Amex card for an existing cardmember will be a SP. Very likely, yes, but not guaranteed.
2. Since you already have an Amex card, the soft pull pre-approval tool likely won't work for you. However, Amex will let you know if you're pre-approved for the card in question when you start the app. I believe these pre-approvals for current cardholders are pretty solid. If you move forward with a new application and are approved but don't like the SL, your only recourse is close the card. I'm under the impression that the card will still report to the CRAs as a closed account and factor into new account and aging metrics.
3. If you already think you've got a good chance to get a low SL, then don't apply.
No it doesn't show you the credit line beforehand . If you try and it says you are preaporoved, not expand your membership , most times it is a SP for existing member but nothing is guaranteed.
if that were the case I wouldn't have my lovely 2K Hilton and delta cards 🙄

Can confirm from personal experience that she's right.

.....and I can confirm that "most" is also correct but certainly does not mean "all"....like @Jnbmom stated, "nothing is guaranteed"
(Hi Sistah!) What happened with me that I like to point out is I received HP's for each and every pre-approved credit product I have app'd with the exception of one where I locked my cr's. before smashing the submit button. Of course I expected a hp for the first app being I was not an existing customer but those others were a surprise/disappointment being most MF'ers were getting sp's, regardless of outcome. Anyway, hp's don't do too much damage and certainly don't last so don't let that deter you, it's the low sl that sux!
If the limit is too low and you're not wanting to wait for a CLI Amex will let you reallocate credit from another card.
I had a 24k limit on my BCP and was quite disappointed when my BCE was approved with a 2k SL. I immediately transferred 10k of my BCP limit to the new BCE.

1. But, I have EX and EQ locked (transunion doesn't seem to allow lock without a paid subscription, but I could freeze for free- but Amex pulls Ex anyway right?). So impossible to get an un-wanted hardpull, I'd just get told they can't do the app with my accounts frozen if they wanted a HP, and that'd be that (would abandon application). As I only want this card if I can get it with both a SP only AND a decent SL limit. Dont want if cost a HP and don't want if SL isn't decent (not interested in growing)
2. This is the heart of what I'm wondering- if I go through the SP app, see the SL, do I have to actually close account or is there a cooling off period where I can call and say I don't want it afterall. And if it does have to be technically open and closed, how that really effects AoAA. Probably need to ask someone who has done this (applied for new card, accepted, then rage-quit the card immediately when SL wasn't enough or for some other reason)
3. I really don't know one way or the other, but its worth the effort/time to apply and see if I can be sure no HP and no detriment to score if I need to back out. I'm not getting love from Amex in CLI in my two existing cards even with zero balances, but I've seen other people on here get no love button love but then get new card approvals with good SLs

Yup, am well aware Amex isn't one of the very few that would show SL beforehand. That's why what I'm asking is what happens if I put in the app, get a SP approval but don't end up wanting the card.
For your low SL Hilton and Delta, did you apply for them at the same time, or did you get one and later get the second in hopes it would be a higher SL than the first?

Surely having all three profiles (or even just Ex) frozen or locked would prevent this from happening?

If you apply you don't get to decline the low SL . So your only choice is to keep card or close it .
No the apps were far apart .
