Cap One Student card denial, recon?

First time poster, long-time lurker. I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I am brand new to credit since I just turned 18 last month. I'm going to college now (summer classes) and I have a full-time job. Right after I turned 18 I applied for the Cap One Student Journey card, because everything I read indicated it would be the easiest to get. I was denied after 3 days because they couldn't access a credit report for me. I expected that, so I got my Experian report which showed my personal info and 1 inquiry from Cap One, which is all that was on my report. I mailed a copy to the address on the denial I got from Cap One with a letter explaining that I had no other credit history because I am 18 and want to build a strong credit history now for when I need it in the future. After about 10 days I got another letter, denied again, no new reason just "We're sorry, we know this isn't the answer you wanted". Based on things I've read here, I emailed the executive office and asked for reconsideration, again explaining my situation. After a week I got an email asking me to call to verify basic info - name, address, phone, DOB and SSN, so I did that.  I wasn't able to speak with the person who emailed me, but the lady I talked to said she would pass along my info and they would get back with me. That was a week ago and I haven't heard anything.  I expected them to verify more than just my basic info. When I responded to the first denial by sending my credit report, I also sent proof of income and enrollment, so I guess the EO would have access to those documents.

While I was in the process of all that with Cap One, I was approved for the Discover IT for students with a $500 CL and, much to my shock, the Citi ThankYou Preferred for Students with a $1000 CL Smiley Surprised  The Discover approval took one day and I had to fax Citi proof of enrollment before they approved.

I know the EO gets tons of requests for reconsideration so the process can take a while and I don't want to annoy them. Would it be okay to email the lady that first emailed me and ask if they need anything else? Is it ever okay to call or email once you've talked to them, or do I just need to wait for them to contact me? I don't need another card; I only applied for Cap One because I thought it would be the only card I'd have any chance at getting. But now I have the inquiries, and it seems odd to deny for lack of credit history for a student card. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Cap One Student card denial, recon?

I'd wait, as you've already reached out to them and gave them the info they need. Plus you finally started your history with the other two cards. If they approve you after the recon, great. If not, no big deal. You're just starting out and discover and citi can grow with you with proper handling. Plus I'm confident cap1 will let you in sooner or later, as they've been pretty generous lately.

Re: Cap One Student card denial, recon?

Congrats on your Discover and Citi approvals!! As for Cap1, I would just wait and let them do their thing. If they still deny you, then let your current cards age at least 6 months so that you can get a Fico score (you don't have one yet because it takes 6 months of credit history to calculate one). After 6 months with your current cards, you will be able to get in with Cap1 (if by some chance they deny you this time). Good luck!
