Cap One question

Question...I have a Cap One QS card and a secured platinum. I would like to close the secured and replace with an unsecured, preferably QS1. When I went to the Cap One pre-qual site, it says "we couldn't match your records to a card offer, but based on your answers, we think you might like this card" and it shows the QS1 card. I know this isn't a pre-approval but what are the odds I would get approved based on my scores as well as the fact that I already have 2 Cap One cards? Thx.

Re: Cap One question

Have you tried upgrading the card via chat? I don't know if they upgrade secure cards or not....You could just ask if they have any offers for you. I know it's possible to get Cap1 cards without being pre-approved. I've done it. What are your scores? I can't see them on my phone.

Re: Cap One question

I tried chat...said I would have to call and talk to the application department. I already knew they wouldn't graduate the card as I've been told that before. I'm not gonna close the account without knowing the new account is approved. My scores are: 12/28/15 - 583EQ | 586TU | 609EX (All Fico 8). Thx.

Re: Cap One question

If you can afford to have 3 inquries (1 on each bureau) you could go for it......I have seen many times with Cap1 that they care more about loyalty, and history with cards than necessarily scores. Your scores are a bit low, but a lot of times as long as you pay on time, and make more than the minimum, Cap1 will surprise you in a pleasant way. :-) I know first hand that when I recently got my Venture, my scores were not "excellent" but I have 3 other cap1 cards, and always pay on time. I've only had the cards 1.5 years or less too. If you've been paying on time and making more than the minimum, go for it! You never know...But as far as the cards that they "recommend" it doesn't mean an approval. I think they pretty much always say that. Good luck!

Re: Cap One question

Thanks...I have a perfect history with Cap One. 3 years with the secured card, 1.5 with the QS. Keep low balances and often make multiple payments each monthly. I wish I knew about the CLI process as I just learned about it here last week and got my first one other than a small auto cli last year. My QS has a $1250 limit after starting at $300. The rep on chat suggested calling in and speaking to someone in the application department so I will see what they say. Thanks again!

Re: Cap One question

So...after calling 3 different numbers and talking to 4 different people, Apparently the only thing I can do is close the secured card and then try applying for a new unsecured card.  Of course, there are no guarantees they will approve. Even though they already have an existing app on file that was declined because I already have 2 cards with them. This is very frustrating!
