I have a Capital One card, but I applied for another one. My mortgage lender is helping me to boost my score so I qualify for downpayment assistance on a house. I need 7 points, and he said I should open another credit card. I have been getting lots of preapprovals from Capital One in my former last name, so I applied online (didn't use a preapproval code or link or anything) with my current last name and was denied. This is a different card from the one that I have. Why would I be getting denied if I have a preapproval? Is it just because of the name difference? My name changed 4 years ago.
I would hope that four years after the change that is still not a factor, but having just changed my last name, who knows. So sorry for the denial. You may want to go online and see if Capital One has any preapprovals available there. Those preapprovals are usually golden. You can also try other sites for preapprovals. Good luck.
When I call the credit bureaus, I still give my maiden name, and they've never questioned it. If I try to dispute something online, I have to use my maiden name or I will get the error that they are having issues accessing my credit report.
You would think the social security number would be the overruling factor, but I guess not.
The same things happened to me when I tried to accept a Credit One preapproval. I used my married name in the acceptance form instead of my maiden name (which the preapproval was issued to), and it said something along the lines of, "We're sorry, we are unable to issue a credit card using an alternative name." My credit reports are all under my maiden name still. My married name is listed as an AKA on some of them.
