Capital One Application: Rookie question

Pre-approved for Platinum on Capital One pre-qualify site. Listed below it as "other cards you might like" is QS1. If I apply for the QS1 and get rejected, can the app fall back to approve for platinum or is it a new app, new HP?

Re: Capital One Application: Rookie question

Hi Federalist. I do not believe the QS1 app would default to the Platinum app if denied. I believe it would be a new app.

However, if you are questioning it- What many others have done here is applied for the Platinum and then upgraded to the regular QS (no annual fee like the QS1) within 2-3 months. There has seemed to be great success with that.

Strongly advise against applying for the QS1 - you'll probably get it, but it's an inferior card

Why, do you ask?

Because it has an AF  - and you can get the no AF platinum converted into a no AF QS in 60 days

Once Cap One issues you an AF card, it's pulling teeth to get the AF removed - only way to win is not to play

Capital One does not offer you a lesser card when considering your application. Very few banks do.

FYI, the Platinum isn't a lesser card than the QS1, and they have similar approval chances. If you go to the prequalifer and choose cashback as your desired feature, do you get a QS1 approval?

Kudos to all three of you for the advice. Yes, it gave me QS1 option when I switched my preference. Going with the platinum then PC in the future. Thanks, all!

Re: Capital One Application: Rookie question

Yeah that Plat is a better way to go unless you plan to use the card a lot and think you'll overcome the AF.  I had both cards and combined them into a new no AF QS which I apped for later, pretty sure Cap One has the QS1 and Plat in the same approval criteria bucket.
