Capital One Quicksilver and Discover it student question

My son is a senior in college. He is an authorized user on one of my cards. Anyway, he applied for the Quicksilver Student visa. Once he received it it was actually the one with the $39 annual fee. Unfortunately, he did not realize it until after activation. I was sitting there when he applied and I'm pretty sure he clicked on the student one. Anyway, Capital One won't budge. He paid the fee but does not want to keep paying that every year. He applied for a Discover it and was approved. Now we are wondering if he should just cancel the Capital One with monthly fees. Should he cancel now or wait until the year is up? Will this hurt his score (he has 741) if he cancels right away?

It shouldn't hurt his score unless utilization spikes up from the loss of the credit line. Age-wise, the account will remain on his reports for up to 10 years after closure.

Okay. Thank you. He has not used his Capital One card. He was charged the annual fee and he paid that off immediately. I think he will go ahead and cancel the Capital One once he receives his Discover card in the mail.

If I may, since he was already charged the AF/it's paid off, maybe just go ahead and keep it for the year and just cancel before the next AF hits. Especially since he won't be able to apply (or at least get approved) for another Cap One card for at least 6 months.
