Hello Everyone,
We will be closing on our first home this coming Tuesday and are thinking of applying for credit after we move in for either Lowes or a furniture store to get us going on furnishing. My scores: EQ721 TU730 EX740 and the husband EQ729 TU733 EX734. Scores look okay over all but what hurts us is our AAoA. My oldest acct is 1 year 3 months and average age 6 months. Husband's oldest acct is 1 year 9 months and average age 8 months. Do credit card companies usually approve based on credit score alone or will they fine tooth comb and look at our AAoA as well. Payment history, amount of debt, & our credit mix are all in excellent condition. Any advice or input is appreciated.
First of all, congratulations on the new home.
Furniture store cards are typically kind of the means of last resort, they're geared more toward people who don't already have and can't easily otherwise get sufficient unsecured credit.
On the surface your profiles appear good enough that I'd first look at getting a Mastercard/Visa with a 0% interest signup offer.

Thank you very much. We should have keys in hand on Tuesday!
I understand what you mean by "on the surface."
For example in order to make our home loan go through, we had to be clear of all IRS debt, which required us to obtain a small personal loan.
All of the preapproval apps were soft hits, but I was shocked at how many lenders declined us (main reason being: short credit history) before we found one who finally approved us for what we needed.
It baffled me how you can qualify for a home loan but not a stinky $5,000 personal loan.
Anyhow, if the retail credit card companies follow the same guidelines for approval, then I don't have a very good feeling about being able to obtain any new credit anytime soon. And all of this is even before our new mortgage and personal loan hit our credit report.

Home loan = secured debt
Personal loan = unsecured debt

Guess I wasn't looking at the bigger picture. lol sheesh it's been a long 45 days......I am burnt out.
Hi YaYa! Congrats on your new home!
Don't know if this will help, but I was approved for a Lowe's card yesterday with a TU score of 725 and AAoA less than yours. SL was $1000, but after a quick call to Credit Solutions, it was increased to $8,000.
As always, YMMV.
Best of luck!

Hello! Wow that is so awesome and most definitely a glimmer of hope. I don't plan on applying at least until a few days after we have the keys though, just to be safe. How do you obtain the credit solutions phone number;is it just provided when you apply?
Thank You!!

Almost forgot, congrats on the house. There are a few lenders known for being friendly to young profiles, Discover and Amex comes to mind, I would hit both prequal sites and see.
Thanks oldman.
We actually have our foot in with Discover already since April.
Husband was approved with $2k starting limit, but has not had any CLIs since.
I currently sit at $1700, $800 of which was the result of an auto CLI of $500 and DD'd an extra $300.
That was a happy day....lol
Does anyone happen to know how often you can ask Discover for a CLI? Do they have limits?
There are no time limits for Discover CLIs, you can hit the button everyday if you want but once a month is probably a more reasonable plan.
My suggestion is to not rush into furnishing the house, take your time so you end up with what you really want while not putting yourself in serious CC debts right off the bat, give yourself time to look around for moving sales, you can often find great deals. Window curtains, a TV and an air mattress is all you need right now.
