Chase CSP or CSR

Logged into my Chase account to see two offers:

- CSR with a CL of $34k

- CSP with a CL of $24k

Both are offering 60k bonus points.

I don't travel much so the CSR may not make sense especially with the high AF. Not sure I'll have an opportunity to make that money back.

The CSP might make more sense given the amount of food/grocery shopping done in my household. I think I'll easily make the AF back and more...

Any thoughts from the pros?

Should I stop in a branch to see if I can get more points. I've read posts where applicants experienced ~80k-90k points from applying in person at a branch.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Chase CSP or CSR

I would definitely check in a branch, as well as seeing if you have an friends who might be able to offer you referrals (which sometimes have higher offers).

As for which to get, if you cannot make use of enough of the Reserve benefits to offset the cost, get the Preferred. However, note that one cannot do a product charge to the Reserve from the Preferred for at least a year, should you have a reason to do so (for example, you start traveling).

Those are two nice preapprovals, @poops.  And they are both great cards.  The big problem I see is where you say you don't travel much, and both of these cards are oriented and most valuable for travelers - or aspirational travelers.   Have you traveled more previously or will you travel more in the future?  Have you had points-based cards before or is this a new venturing from cash back?  Travel points cards can be quite lucrative but mainly if you're willing to be patient for delayed redemption  (since meaningful redemption thresholds may take longer to achieve) and if you're leaning towards redeeming for travel instead of cash-gift cards etc.

I'm assuming you plan to keep the Sapphire card and not just getting it for the SUB cash value?  If so, by all means the CSP is better for SUB alone.

Yes, in-person offers can be better, so it's worth a try to appear in-branch.  This may be the case in particular if you have a more established relationship with Chase via banking and/or private client.

Keep in mind that with the wide definition of "travel" with Chase, that $300 automatic credit on Sapphire Reserve also applies to potential everyday commuting expenses like tolls, parking, railroads, taxis and ferries ... not to mention the usual airfare, hotels, rental cars, cruises, etc.   And it's easy to recoup since there's no need to request it.  Applicable charges are automatically credited.

I'd say if you're planning to resume travel, whether to go with the Reserve over the Preferred depends on how much you would value the airport Priority Pass Lounge access, the much-enhanced travel protections (see >this link< for why CSR is best-in-class; CSP offers some but not as much), the likelihood of redeeming URs in the Chase portal (at 1.5x UR for CSR vs 1.25x UR for CSP), whether you'd value the Roadside Assistance ($50 credit up to 4x per year equivalent to basic AAA), whether you'd value the TSA Global Entry credit, whether you'd benefit from the extra earnings on general travel spend (3x versus 2x), and other deep-dive factors.

For a light or occasional traveler, the CSP may be a better fit.

If you don't travel much I don't see the point in getting either card, personally.

There are much better cards than the CSP for grocery shopping.

And yes there are many reports of getting a better SUB if you apply in person.
