Hi all,
So I'm a current student looking to get into the Chase system. I current have a Citi Double Cash card (with a credit limit of only $900). I signed up for this card about two months ago (mid feb). I think that is due to my part time job where my income is very low. I will be starting an internship this summer where will my income will go up dramatically and that could lead to a full time job at the place i'm interning or elsewhere. I want to get into the Chase ecosystem and want to start off with the freedom card (since unlimited is close to my Citi card). I will want sapphire down the line. My credit score is high due to a 7 year history as an authorized user (it's about 780). However, my history as a primary user is only two months. I was considering waiting until I hit the three month mark to apply. My 5/24 status is currently 1/24. I really want the Chase Trifecta and Amex Gold cards. I want to get started on the Chase cards first but will I be auto denied from chase due to not having a year of history of credit as a primary user despite my high credit score?
I agree with Remedios - Chase is not friendly to thin files and given that yours is only a single card with 2 months history (the AU won't factor in for them), you should get that card to at least the 12 month mark before approaching Chase. If you're desperate for the cash back, go in the direction of Discover IT. Discover is much more friendly to thin files and having two cards age together over 12 months will make you look less risky to Chase in a year but you should only apply if you actually need it.
Thank you for the reply. Could I potentially get an Amex Gold card instead? Would they consider my AU status? I didn't think getting the freedom would be difficult being that I was approved for a similar card from Citi the double cash. I am not in need of credit or extra cash back I just want the travel rewards. Thanks!

It's too hard to be split between amex and Chase for rewards. I did it years ago and all my spend went to Chase. IMO, you should pick a rewards system that works best for you and stick with it. Either UR or MR, not both, eapecially if your income is on the low end. Trying to use both will just dilute your rewards and you'll get nowhere with either. I second the Discover card. It's a good card that will be around even when you're established.
I don't care about UR versus MR i'm just going to transfer points to airlines for free flights. I don't really care about which airline. I don't want the Discover IT because I'm ok with cashback at 2% with Citi I just want Chase cards for points but if I have to wait a year I probably rather just sign up for Amex.

Well... go ahead and apply for the Chase Freedom card. Apparently the lure of "free" travel and Insta-fame is too difficult to resist.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
