Hey there,
I just posted this in another thread I have, but thought others might be interested in this particular story.
I applied for a Chase Freedom card today and got declined. I had a 641 when they pulled EQ, which was a little surprising because I figured that was acceptable for the Freedom card. Anyway, I called the recon line and spoke to a nice lady who basically suggested that a chargeoff I have on my file is what's keeping them from approving me. So I basically recapped with her and said "so if I pay the chargeoff, everything else looks ok?" and she basically said yes... or at least as close to yes as she can without getting in trouble.
So today I called up the credit union I had the open chargeoff for (which is like 4 years old now but anyway) and asked if they can offer a pay-for-delete, but she insisted they couldn't. So I paid it anyway with a credit card by phone and she said within a week or so it should be reflected in my file. The chargeoff was reported only on Equifax, and Chase (who checks EQ for me) is the only one who has given me trouble about the chargeoff... so I think once that's updated I should be able to get my foot in the door with Chase. I want the Freedom card just to have it, and maybe upgrade to something else later, like the United card or something.
Anyway, besides some bad history about 2 or 3 years ago, the chargeoff is the only unpaid baddie I had, and I just decided to pay it. Anyone with personal experience like this, and what the outcome was after taking care of the chargeoff?
Thanks!
I don't have any experience on that, but let us know how it turns out.

Chase did question my chargeoff for first premier. But it is going to fall off in 2 months, I told them I will not pay a CO that will fall off in 2 months
Hate to be negative, but i guess ill share my experience with you.
I had a $2k charge off in 2006, paid it off immediately shorty after i the harrasment started.
Charge off fell off, leaving a 90day late derog from a cap one account.
Fast forward to 2013, i apped to chase freedom, got denied. "Not enough paid as agreed lines, and a derogatory account." And they mentioned the charge of during recon.
2014
I apped for chace freedom 2 more times each app almost 6 months apart. Each time the charge off was brought up as one of the reasons for my denial.
I tried to call recon many times and was denied each time, Convo always ended with something along the lines of "Because we are seeing a charge off and your new accounts we cant offer you anything right now."
Chase has a blacklist, and they are very unforgiving in some cases.
I had no idea at 19 years old a charge off would ruin my chances of getting another chase card.
CSP is my dream card, but it seems like ill never get it, atleast not for a very very long time. Charge offs with chase seem to last a long time in their memory. And there is definitely a blacklist for some individuals.
Good luck, and that's weird because when I applied for the csp and freedom I had a collection showing on my ex and tu. My initial lines were 5k and 2k
DH had an unpaid collection on all 3 CRAs when he applied and was approved for the Freedom. He has since PFD which has increased his scores dramtically.

I think they view C/O's in a more negative light than collections.
Thanks, everyone. Seems like you never know with Chase. I really want to get in with them as two of the cards I want more than any others are the United and CSP cards. I'm also trying to get an AMEX Gold business card, but I think their main problem is the new accounts I have. I opened two cards in December, so I'm going to wait until mid-April for my next, and hopefully penultimate app spree for a while. I'm going to try for the Chase United and AMEX Gold business cards in April, and then maybe in 9-12 months give the AMEX SPG and CSP a try if my score is good enough. I don't want the Freedom card that badly as I'm more interested in miles than cash back (plus I have a couple of QS1s anyway). I only tried the Freedom because it's Chase and seems easy to get, but I'm just going to forget about Chase until I can qualify for the United card. Let's hope that'll be in April. In the mean time, I've written a few GW letters and paid that chargeoff, so you never know. I'll definitely write about the outcome!
Your charge-off seems pretty old. Once paid, they still might want to see some time go by after that. It's always a good idea to pay them if you can. You'll get there. Just a matter of time. ![]()
