Hi everyone!
Just this February (2020), I got approved for a Chase Sapphire Preferred with a 730 credit score. Prior to that, I've only owned a First Hawaiian Bank (local bank) United Card and a Discover IT card, so I was pretty happy about that.
Today, I applied for a Chase United Explorer card with a 751 credit score, despite it saying that I have POOR approval odds on Credit Karma. I used my friend's referral link and I am hoping to be approved. I should also add that my friend was approved for Chase United Explorer with a 670 credit score sometime last year and it also read POOR approval odds for her on CK right before she got her approval letter, so I feel like I have some hope!
Does anyone have any experience with getting approved/declined with Chase United Explorer? Any tips would be appreciated. I'm having anxiety again as I await the decision.
First of all, the approval odds on CK are notoriously unreliable as they are based on general demographics and not your specific profile.
If your CSP was the last card you had applied for, there haven't been any derogs reported on your profile since then, and if the combined credit limit on your current Chase cards (CSP + United) is less than (your yearly gross income - $5K) then you should have a good chance.
Have you called the robolady to check your status?
What is the other United card you hold - TravelBank?
If that 670 of your friend's was their ck score, their fico8 may have been much higher.
I'll echo what everyone else has said and add if the score you're saying you have is coming from credit karma is a vantage score and 98% of banks use FICO scores. As an example, my vantage scores are all mid 700's while pretty much all of my FICO's are 800+. Sites like credit karma/ credit sesame are fairly decent for monitoring but scores and their card recommendations are pretty much trash.
Have you checked out the just for you section of chase out to see if you have any offerings or used the prequalify tool?
You could also possibly gauge how much they liked your profile based on the interest rate and starting limit of the CSP. High rate and low SL usually equates to something they didn't like at least in my experience.
Thanks, I feel much better. I'm still fairly new to checking my credit score regularly so CK has been my go-to. But after this I realized I shouldn't make it my go-to... Lol. Thank you!
My other United card is First Hawaiian Bank. It is a local bank (based in Hawaii).
I haven't called the robolady because I haven't received any email regarding my application yet... Not too sure where to go from here? It's odd. When I applied for CSP I got an email giving me a heads-up on when I should be expecting a reply, almost immediately after I turned in my application. So far I haven't heard anything from Chase regarding this UE.
Go ahead and call in and you should be able to get an idea of the status of your application.
Thanks! I just finished looking at the Application Status on my Chase page, but it says this:
You may have active applications not shown here and could have received communications from us about those applications.
I figured I'd just give them a call today.
Aw, man. I just called and got the 7-10 day message. I read often that this means it is a denial, but I did get the 7-10 day message before I got approved for the CSP.
It could be a denial or it could be they need verification that it was you that applied.
You can call back on Monday morning and transfer through to speak to someone (be prepared to explain why you want the card if its a recon) or you can wait for the letter and decide what you want to do.
Just got an email today saying that I was denied because "Length of time since oldest credit card was opened is too short." I understand (my earliest card is 1 year 7 mos old), but... how I got approved for the CSP is beyond me. Lol! They took my credit score at 753. Just for anyone wondering.
