I just applied for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card, and it gave me a 7-10 day notice. I called the backdoor and they said that my application wasn't denied, but that they're sending me something in the mail to sign and return to them to continue processing. Any idea on what that could be?
When I applied, it said this: We have received your application and further processing is required. We will contact you in approximately 7-10 days regarding our decision. If approved, be sure to visit citicards.com to register and manage your account online. Thank you for requesting a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World EliteTM Mastercard.
And, when I want to check the status online, it replies with this: We cannot complete your request at this time. Please call 888-201-4523 for assistance.
My FICO bankcard 8, which they use, is 724. Reg Fico 8 is 710.
Thanks.
Update: I called again, and they said its a form from the IRS to verify my identity. Anyone ever heard of that?

Sounds like verification. Have you recently moved, or have fraud alert on reports.

Nope, I don't. I just called back and its a 4506-T form, so income verification. I just cancelled the application, as I really don't want to provide that. My income is accurate and all, but I haven't provided that to anyone before, and I rather Citi not have access to all my income and tax information just for a credit card.

This is becoming more common, especially on first card with lender. Citi and Disco seem to be leading the pack.

Is there any way around that? Do you think, if I wait a few months, I could try again and they won't make me do that? Or, will it always happen from now on?

There's no real way around it when they request it but it's possible that at some point in the future they make loosen their internal guidance.
Another issuer known to request them is American Express especially in response to CLI requests.
One point I want to make clear is that a lot of people refuse to approve a 4506-T request purely on philosophical grounds so you're neither alone nor does a refusal reflect negatively on you.
@Anonymous A request for income verification is becoming a recurring theme these days. Here's to hoping that it's only due to COVID and not a new sign of times to come. I don't know how Citi is but I have read that there are lenders who once they request it, if you fail to comply and even cancel the application the same request comes up even when you apply in the future. I hope that's not the case with Citi.
