@Janus and OP,

Not weird at all. The exact same thing happened to me that the OP went through. Mine was 2017 when a payment was returned due to bank error.

Citi must vary in this treatment then. When I went to pay my wife's Citi card bill a couple of months ago I accidently must have selected "pay the entire balance" (about 9k) instead of the payment I was planning to make. This is more money than I had in my bank account and the payment was returned. I called and let them know what happened and they said I might get a $27 returned item fee but other than that nothing would happen. Luckily I paid way ahead and still had time to get the correct payment in before it was late. A month later I hit the CLI button and got a $4k increase over the $10k existing CL. Apparently one returned payment doesn't annoy them too much, at least if it doesn't go late.

Re: Citi AAdvantage - Declined on Past Relationship

Thought I would update this thread. Got declined again. Quite a-hole ish but whatever. AMEX likes me better anyways.

Got the canned letter that says the same thing, based on prior relationship status. Which doesn't really make any sense as they reviewed it and came up with the same conclusion. Not really sure why they did take the time to review if they came up with the same opinion.

Re: Citi AAdvantage - Declined on Past Relationship

Thanks for updating your thread OP and sorry about the outcome.

When you reached out to them, were they able to open a separate case regarding that previous "flag"? Aside from the declined application.

Well, at least you tried.

Recently wanted to get back into the AAdvantage card game to rack up some AA miles and applied for the Citi AAdvatange Platinum Select World Elite card.

Was an AAdvantage Platinum Select holder until about late 2016 when Citi closed the account due to a returned payment when I was on unemployment and going thru a bit of a rough patch. I was able to secure a payment agreement and lower APR on the card and paid for about 14 months until I finally paid the entire balance in full around August 2018. Before the hiccup, I was a loyal customer for almost 4 years with impeccible payment history and even received 2 CLI during that time.

Filled out the app online and got an instant decline. Called app status to see why I was declined and was told about "past relationships". Was told there was nothing they could do, so I called in again day after to actually speak to someone in the credit analysis department. Was told the same but given absolutely no details about how to go about getting this removed or having a reconsideration done.

I have AMEX Blue Sky, Everyday, and Platinum cards, and a Chase SWA RR card that I use for my tolls to keep activity rolling thru monthly. Barclays Aviator Red (Yes I know it's an AA card as well), and Apple Rewards card. Have had zero problems obtaining credit as I have FICO scores in the ~739-742 range for all three agencies and 8% utilization across all accounts that I mentioned, primarily in my monthly spend which is paid off every month on the AMEX platinum.

Does anyone have any experience with Citi in this regard? I figured because it was never charged off and PIF that there would have been some leeway -- especially with my past history,

This is why I smile whenever someone on this forum talks about building a "relationship" with a bank. There's no such thing. Banks will cut you off at the knees.

Re: Citi AAdvantage - Declined on Past Relationship

Just a 2nd update on this saga with Citi.

On a whim Saturday, I bit on an app offer from Citi for the Double Cash card and was insntantly approved and got a $6,800 starting limit. Not sure if this is a foreshadowing of possibly getting back into their AA cards, but it can't be a bad thing. Will probably use for a nice dinner and let it grow.
