I received my DC in September 2016 and had marked my calendar to ask for a CLI in March 2017. However, someone on these myFICO forums said they requested a CLI after having the card for only two months and approved for a significant increase. Because I am running so much through the card I have to pay it weekly or every two weeks because of the high utilization, decided to go ahead and ask for an increase. Received a definite "no" without a HP. Declined the HP. CSR confirmed that the normal time for a first CLI is at or after six months. Bah Humbug!
With your scores as good as they are, it may be worth it to take the HP if you've got the income/profile to support much higher limits. I did the HP CLI at around 2 months after I got the card and went from $3,600 to $8,400. If you do take the HP CLI, shoot for the moon--I requested $17,500 and they countered. I think others may have asked for as much as $25k, but not sure. And I got an additional $1,600 CLI at the 6-month mark via SP.
The nice thing about Citi is that the SP CLI timer doesn't restart after a decline, so you're still good to go at the 6 month mark if you want to wait it out.
I agree with the above also since your numbers look STRONG in my opinion.
One thing Citi seems to have a bug with is "new accounts" in the past 6 months but their EO can override.
Recently as just last week though, my SP CLI page suddenly turned into a HP Only page.
That took me by surprise since one of my (2) cards with them is been since 2013
When Citi says 180 days between increases they REALLY mean it. Best bet is to wait for 6 months SP approval. Do the SP and then request what you want..Don't be shy about it either. I went from $3k to $20k by doing this. As soon as they give you the SP increase, go to the next option online and request more. It is important to do this immediately. If you wait till the next week to do it. You will most likely be denied. They will tell you, you're not eligible for another 180 days. Most of the SP CLIs are pretty small..It will just piss you off. Lol
One HP isn't going to put your scores in the crapper. What's the purpose of having good credit ..if you're afraid to use it?
GB,
I am curious and from your post here you may know.
I am just rebuilding and got approved for a $2k Citi Costco. It should arrive in the next day or two. I have read in multiple posts that some cards allow a CLI request on the day the account is activated.
Do you know if Citi allows this?
Thanks
Mike

I agree 100% with every thing written in this post. If you decide to follow GB's advice, good luck!

Sorry for not seeing this sooner--if you take the hard pull, they should allow it. I read of several folks doing that with their DCs upon receiving the card, but it's backfired on some folks too--taking a 2nd (or third if Citi double pulled for your original app) HP for naught. I don't have any experience with the Costco card, though, and I'm not sure if Citi treats it differently.
I also believe the 6 month without an HP is spot on. They auto increased my card 2 months ago. Tried an SP CLI today and got denied. Given my income and scores (760-780), I could probably call and get one but I dont want the HP it will take. As an aside, got an instant CLI on Discover yesterday for $3500 bringing it to $18,800. The ATT is only 2100. Pretty sure its a timing issue with Citi who offers the card.
