Hey all,
I'm wondering if anyone might know how many accounts Citi considers to be "too many", when considering a CLI request.
I've been requesting CLI on my CC and DC but keep getting the following reason for denial:
"We're unable to approve your request because your credit report shows too many recently opened accounts."
Do we know how many accounts is "too many"? And how recent is "recently"? 12, 18, 24 months etc?
Also, do we know if they are referring to just credit card accounts or are they considering auto loans and mortgage too?
Apologies if this has all been talked about before. I swear I used the search feature before posting this.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
Cheers!

I believe it's 2/6 revolving accounts for Citi CLIs. I just received the exact same message the other day when I requested one on my DC. I am currently at 2/6 and have been consistently receiving SP CLIs when under that amount. I'll try again after I'm below that mark in another few months and suspect I'll be back in their good graces. Where are you at currently for new accounts out of curiosity?

Thanks for the insight. At the moment, I'm 2/6 on my revolving accounts. Come mid January, I should be 1/6 and can test your theory as well.
If this truly is the reason for my CLI denial (I know sometimes they can put BS reasons), it's going to help me stay in the garden (at least until mid January) ![]()

Definitely not a fluff reason, Citi is known to be sensitive within that six month period in particular. I have a feeling they'll hit you with the big money once you're back to 1/6.
Good luck to us both on that next go around!

I have been shown the same *too many inquiries* I was 3/6 4/24... have one account left to finally get over the 6mo mark, then try again. Amex and BoA didn't mind and approved my request.
Just my data point here:
I have three new accounts in the last six months and got a double up from 9k to 18k over the weekend on my costco citi.

I know with me, they mentioned looking back 3-YEARS! Wow.
Here is my story if you want to check it out. I was denied for Citi Custom Cash.
In a nutshell in case you don't want to read the whole thread:
At the time of applying, I was:
0/8 & 4/12 on new accounts.
0/6 & 1/12 on inq's on EX which they pull
1% UTIL
780 FICO 8 (on Citi they give you FICO Scorecard 8, which just today went to 816.)

FYI, although they show EQ bankcard enhanced score 8 for the score they display, they may use another bureau for their CLI decisions. The last couple of denials I received from them last year cited TU. My most recent denial cited EQ. Citi is just one of those that can pull any of them on you.
