Long time reader and non poster. Thought I would start. Best website by far. So I went on another app spree like I do every 3 months lol.
4 years ago I had tons on baddies, no credit cards, Company that ran on cash and losing money every month. Score was in the 400's I think.
Now I'm a happy credit card collector w over 23 on file. Highest limit is 16k with BOA and lowest Cap One at $300 which I recently opened and probably will close. Long story short a long road and doing well but am a credit card addict.
I recently applied for Amex and got 2 with low limits (2k blue every day and everyday 1k TD for Business Blue) I got few weeks ago. So I said what the hell let me try for Citi Rewards(TD), another Chase (TD), another BOA(TD) and an EBates(TD).
I have 2 Old Navy(5k), 1 Banana Republic(5k), WM Store(6k), WM Business(5k), WM Discover(6k), Sams Store(6k), Paypal Mastercard(6k), JC Penny(4k), Lowes(5k) and Chevron(3k) from Synchrony.
Chase Southwest(5k), Amex Blue ED(2k), Amex Every(1k), BOA(16k they love except they wont give me second card), Cap One Quick(2600), Cap OnePlatinum(1500), Cap One Business(5k), Discover(2500), Kay Jewlers(3k).
Util in 30% or little less, 6 fig income, 40 inquiries on each bureau, only 1 collection on EXP in dispute(3k medical), 4yr old students loans that still show but that was my last negative late which BOA always refers too when they deny me.
So I was reading up on the Citi since I couldnt recon the others. I called the the regular customer service with a canned speach about my util and many inquiries but when I pushed for details. She said she couldnt access account without pulling report so I ended call with No thank you. I wanted to try first before calling EO(Executive Office) today. Talked to very nice person who tried but couldn't pull up my application for some reason. So he said they would try to find it and touch base with me with manual review. I thought to myself oh well back to gardening until Nov when time for CLIs lol. Surprisingly he actually called me back and said he found it. He said he would send it to CA for manual review. He didn't ask but I addressed the denial reasons which were 1: Utilization 2: Too many new Accounts, Too Many Inquiries. All true but I put a twist which is also true and he added the notes for me. I closed 3 accounts and opened more so I didn't really have more accounts, Applications were for CLI not New Accounts. Util I didn't address lol.
I'll let you guys know in 4 days how it turns out.

In the eyes of Citi, though, inquiries are inquiries. It doesn't matter too much what they were for. Closing accounts also tends to not really impress underwriters as far as getting past the "too many new accounts" thing. Your total number of accounts may not have changed, but you still have recent new accounts.
30% utilization may be a problem too and you may have trouble getting past that. Unfortunately, with the utilization and credit seeking behavior, creditors tend to think you are in financial trouble and digging a hole. Whether that's actually true or not, that's how it can appear. Good luck with the recon, stranger things have happened.
Hi there OP,
I have created your own thread on this in the apps forum. I changed the title and left everything else intact.
UPDATE:
Still declined for Citi at least not another hard pull. I have 20 inquiries and 8 new accounts within last 3 months lol so I definitely understand. I did also recon with BOA for the Cash Rewards Card and think I have a good shot with that. I have my business account with them and highest limit CC. Talked to customer service rep and he reopened application. Referred it to Analyst. Not sure if I should call them or just let it settle itself. What do you guys think?
Reason for recon decline first time was negative payments. I had some student loans that I thought were in deferment 3 - 4 years ago and they weren't. Rep sounded like it was something that he could overcome the system with. I have not missed any payments since then.
Thanks.
Well I called BOA Credit analyst and did get approved for the card but only for $1000 . I guess that's better than nothing. To the garden I go.
