Citibank verification confusion

I'm so frustrated!  I apped for a Citi card last week and got the 7 - 10 day message.  A letter arrived today... at an address I haven't lived at for the past two years.  I thought maybe I had a brain fart and put the old address on the app.  I do have two addresses, mailing and physical, but that one isn't either of them anymore!  Thankfully I still know the person who lives there and they forwarded the letter to me.  I called the number, they said they purposely sent the verification to an old address to prove that I'd lived there at some point (???).  What if I didn't know the people that lived there anymore!  They asked me for my current address and I told them, but then I'd realized I gave them the physical instead of the mailing address I used for the app... now there are three addresses in the mix and these people are going to think I don't know where I live.

Then came the phone numbers.  I also have two of those, personal and work cell.  I put my work cell on my app because its the one I make sure is with me at all times.  My other phone is on a family plan with my parents and siblings.  They want a copy of my cell phone bill.  Neither of them are in my name.  I tried to explain this to them and they said seeing my surname on the bill (since its the same as my parents) would be fine, so I had to ask them to change the number on the app to the personal cell.

I swear, if they're trying to prevent fraud, all I've done is probably convinced them that I'm not who I say I am at all, since I apparently don't know my own address or phone number.  Hopefully the copy of my social security card they also requested will convince them.  I've never had to go through all this to get a credit card before.  I mean I'm glad they're on the lookout for fraud but I can't believe they'd purposely send my mail to an address I did not give them.

I would guess (pure speculation) you have a creditor (like I do) that continues to report that old address. Citi possibly seen it reported in the past 12 months and expected either a change of address notification from USPS or the mail piece being returned.

Hopefully all this extra proof work's in your favor.

I mean, I don't have any collections or anything but the address *is* still on my CR.  But so are like six other old ones, so I was really confused why they'd do that.  Like did they just choose one at random? Smiley LOL  Thank you, I'm hoping so!  It seems strange that they would go through all this effort just to turn around and deny me but this entire thing is such a mess that I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
