So, I have never been asked to provide POI since I started getting credit in 1995. Personally, how I feel, if my accounts are zero and my score is good (720), if a lender asks for POI, my feeling is, I am not going to provide it. I have never had to in the past and I will not moving forward.
If I choose not to do so and I don't reply to their request for the documents, do they just not approve what I am asking for ? OR does that raise flags and they close or CLD your account ?
If you are applying for a new card then they will just deny you. If you applied for a CLI they will not give it to you. Whether they do a CLD is a whole diferent story.

1) As other posters have said they''l just deny the request, as is their choice.
2) I'm with you I don't provide POI willy, illy anymore...not in today's environment, no way!
From time to time...I'll budge for certain lenders...of course for a mortgage etc but otherwise
it's too intrusive and I really don't TRUST the the security and privacu of mine info...I've worked in many
environments and I know how flippant data is thrown around and I'm not 'that' comfortable with ALL my info just
floating around the place....just for niff n giggles.
Recently apped for PenFed...THEY approved for 20.5k CC (not my request) and a small (under 10k) auto refi
THEN asked for paystubs (ok haven't had to for many, many lenders but ok it's PenFed)
Then it's ID AND SS card b/c an address issue NOTARIZED (not liking this but ok, if THIS is the LAST request)
Also each time different ppl seemed confused, not understanding a refi isn't purchase...
Calls from several states, even Hawaii
Then ok we just need 2 years Tax returns and 2015 W-2
I'm DONE...Are youi nuts? I'm not having my entire LIFE floating around a bunch of offices just for giggles and
'wow look at THIS guy's info'....for 1 more CC (that, I didn't 'need' just grabbing it to start a relationship w/ Pen and to
pad util (20.5k is nice as a SD place holder) and HUGE savings on a small auto loan ...a whopping $300-400 bucks over
4 years (just I can create with a $20/mo over pay)
Why would I jump thru THAT many hoops...
They saw the CR...they saw the other lenders....I didn't NEED it 'that bad'....I went to and paid a freaking notary AND
NOW you want my private tax info (I won't mention that once ID's are sent...it's hard to know if HOW you LOOK is 'why'....
more stuff is all of a sudden needed?)
So need now we can't dance, as I won't app with them ever again....too many other dance partners to be raked over the coals
over a CC not a mortgage or a 'real' auto loan
We already give too much info to be stored and possibly stolen in data breaches but for each and every CC issurer to have every piece of info
needed to ruin one's identity...no thanks
Like others have asked...who's the lender? If they'll accept something as simple as paystubs then I'm okay with that I guess. My paystubs don't really provide any more data than they already have on me. Any more than that then maybe I'd start to question why or if I really wanted the product bad enough to comply.
I don't mind providing proof of income. It's part and parcel with being self-employed.

I have yet to be asked to provide POI. Employment verification sure but not the first lender has ever asked me for check stubs, tax returns, W4s, etc. I agree that aside from a mortgage, I would feel uncomfortable providing such info to a lender.

DCU asked me for proof of income for an auto refinance. The loan was in excess of 50k so I figured they might be skittish. I am retired so I had to send them copies of my annuities, retirements and government benefits to support my annual income figures I listed on the app. Once they got it no problem. I do have an issue with info just floating around such as Barfclay who had me send it numerous times. I tracked all of the mail I sent to them and it got to them but you have to wonder where it went in their offices since they could not seem to find it several times. I really don't feel comfortable sending it but when you want something from them they call the shots. I do think I might be a little more unwilling to send all of this info out now but then I don't anticipate asking for any credit any time soon. They know they have us over a barrel when we want their money so BOHICA.
If one has a problem providing proof of income I certainly would avoid CU's. I personally have no issue with it, but to each and their own. It is unsecured credit after all. Banks or CU's or whomever is just doing the most to protect themselves
