Credit cards for non citizens

My wife is in the process of getting her green card, I was wondering if this makes any difference on how credit card companies look at her applications, or rather if she doesn't qualify for certain cards (she does have a SSN) She currently has a disco 1250(opened Nov 2019), ulta store cc 1250 limit(opened oct 2020), and apple card that just got a cli to 4700(opened Aug 2020). She's also an AU on 8 of my accounts so her total SL is around 20k I tried applying for Wells Fargo propel and Amex Gold for her both with denials mainly for short credit history. Her scores across the board are 760, maybe 6-7 inquiries total.  Any insight would be appreciated. Also would amex consider using the hard pull to see if she qualifies for a diff product without having to take another hit? Tried to recon both apps, waiting on a response from amex, WF said they wouldn't be able to do a recon for it.

Already did soft preapprovals for the cards that has them, she didn't qualify for anything, still got the disco apple and ulta haha... guess just wait more for the accounts to age.

Maybe the FI's want to see a long term stay in the country, getting that Green Card as you indicated.  Idk but that could indeed be the case....History.

Possibly? I mean she's been here for 10 years almost already, but it's just a waiting game at this point. Sadly the credit game can only be played in one way. I'm in sort of the same situation where I don't qualify for loans or ccs or CLI for "too many inquiries" and end up having to buy things cash rather than build my credit profile up because I tried building my credit profile up too quickly lol...

Re: Credit cards for non citizens

Being an immigrant myself (I came here 12 years ago), I do not think lenders approve based on immigration status and I do not think it's a factor. At least for credit cards. Your short history is held against you, everyone one of us who is an immigrant, has to deal with that situation. My history of 12 years is still considered short Smiley Frustrated. Plus, you generally get worse financing rates for car loans and such. The only time where I saw immigrantion status being a problem or result in an actual denial, is getting approved for a morgage. A friend of mine on an H1B was not able to secure a morgage, the bank clearly stated they were not comfortable to hand out a 30y morgage to someone with a visa potentially expriring in 4 years.

I think everyones journey is this country is different, but I agree it can be highly frustrating and humiliating. Maybe hold off any applications for now, let the existing cards age and just make sure you do not accumulate late payments.

Good to know. Yeah, I'm going to let things age, she did just get approved for a personal loan for 6k ill probably end up paying off after a few months (0% for 18 months) to add a bit to her mix of credit, it's just annoying I cant get her 7-8 cards so her history grows much quicker and new accounts won't ding her for as much... Funny enough, disco and commenity refuse to give her a CLI, while barclays was like here's a random CLI for you!
