I've had a BoA credit card account open for about 15 years. A few years ago I applied for the Amtrak card; at the time I had some high credit utilizations on other cards, so BoA, took my 8K credit line, reduced it to 2K and gave me a 6K Amtrak line. They subsequently sold off the Amtrak card accounts. I don't use my BoA card with such a low credit line. Now that I have no outstanding credit card debt, I thought I would apply for a CLI on my 15-year-old BoA account; I've had a BoA checking account for 35 years, although it is not my main account. BoA's app said I had a FICO score of 797, my scores range from FICO mortgage 2 770 to FICO card 9 821.
BoA sent me a denial. They made no reference to my score. They simply stated, "trend in balance compared to credit line on one or more of your accounts with us". (is that because I wasn't using the card enough because I have no outstanding balance on the account? I wouldn't want to go over even a $200 10% credit utilization of the credit line which wouldn't pay my monthly cable TV bill). It also said "Balance relative to your credit line on one or more of your accounts on your credit file." I have a home equity line that is closed at the start of the repayment phase with a fixed monthly payment. Would that cause a problem? I pay off my credit card balances before the monthly statements generate. Just found it cryptic that BoA would deny any CLI increase with an 800-level credit score, with my income level, and no outstanding credit card debt. The denial made no reference to my credit score, and when I called for reconsideration, they said I simply had to request a copy of my credit report to find out why they denied my increase. But even looking at the report, I can't reconcile with the denial letter comments. This past month I converted a 20-year-old NFCU Platinum account to Flagship Rewards; NFCU increased the credit line by $8k without a hard pull so I was miffed to have a denial from BoA on an account with such a low credit limit.
I would decipher the BoA Cryptic denial about;
"trend in balance compared to credit line on one or more of your accounts with us"
to mean not enough use -> as in trended data.
In other words, if you are not using enough of your credit limit,
why should we give you more? ...Just my .02 cents worth
Sounds like something BoA would do...
I had an overdraft on my checking pull a cash advance from my CCR card, via "balance connect" 6 months ago, due to a glitch at another bank debiting my BoA checking when they shouldn't have.
Now when I request a CLI, I get denied with a reason code for a recent cash advance.
Seriously, utilizing an account feature, that they specifically nag people to enable, results in being penalized.🙄
And I'm a Platinum Honors Preferred Rewards member!

That is how I read it as well, and/or the heloc that just went from the spend to pay phase, and didn't have enough history paying the monthly payment.

You can always call them and ask them

Yeah, I'd be on the phone with a senior analyst.

If they deny my CLI again this month, I'll probably call.
I'd move my Roth IRA and brokerage account somewhere else if it wasn't for the bonus on the CC rewards.
Even with the supposed discounts, I can get better rates on loans with a random credit union than at BoA.
The rate I got on my recent HELOC with Amplify CU was more than 2% lower than what BoA offered, factoring in the preferred rewards discounts, and was even lower than BoA's 6 month intro rate. Can't really beat prime+0% on a HELOC in Texas though.
