I didn't get any for credit card. They pulled separate pull for the credit card. I wait two months to apply for the credit card. I applied for the crdit because of free EQ FICO. I heard you don't need to have credit card to get monthly free FICO score.

Thanks Ron. I want to make sure I understand what you've said.

You didn't get any OFFER for a CC.

You app'd for CC separately after two months for the CC.

Yes?

I didn't get any pre-approval when I joined. You cannot use same HP for bothe membership and credit card.  You don't have to wait to apply for credit card like me. Most of them applied for the credit card after they joined.

Ron.

Thanks for clarifying.

Right, can't use same HP as membership, but I thought he could use the same one as the auto loan. He's already been double pulled by them.

No, you cannot use the same HP for everything. You will get another HP if you apply for credit card.  You will have 3 HP on EQ.  I waited for 2 months for my score to climb back up. I was instantly approved $10K. They told me I got pre-approval auto loan waiting every month. The card is just average. I like Penfed cc. You will get more from Penfed. Penfed offers quarterly pre-approval if you have their card for over a year. Have you joined Penfed?

Ron.

Haven't joined Penfed. It was your Penfed post that made me ask about this re: DCU and offers. I'm already juggling local CU, US Bank and now DCU. Not sure I can handle another CU just now. If it's a HP, we'll likely just accept the offer that the local CU gave with the auto app pull.

I feel like DH's TU is low because he's AU on most things vs. primary and the way they list bankcard balances, I think since the few things he IS primary on are the 0% things we're carrying balances on, he's being hit hard. He needs some Util cushion as a primary, not AU.

Penfed is a good CU. I like them. I have been with them for over 2 years. They offered me pre-approval auto loan and credit card without any HP. I haven't accepted mine yet. I don't need any auto loan yet. They sent me a blank checks in January. All I need to take the dealer to take the dealer and walked out with the new cars.

Ok. I think you might heard Penfed from others. They don't like people carrying high balances. You need to think about it before you join. Penfed doesn't offer any 0% BT checks or offers.

It depends what you are looking for. Rewards? Low APR?  HIgh CL?

Ron.

High limit for DH just for util insulation, but the potential perks of being able to BT at a low rate if no 0% offers are around when current 0% end 7/16. Also being able to use in a pinch, the no-fee-cash-advance-same-rate-as-purchase sounded good. Basically would make it a low rate PLOC in card form, to me. Plenty of rewards already.

You might want to try NFCU. They are more generous. I haven't heard too many people get more than $10K from DCU.  No fee BT. It is hard to come by nowadays.

Ron.

Not eligible for NFCU. Thanks for letting me know about SL for DCU. Will probably just wait. Or may take the offer from my CU.

Just got off the phone with CU (someone higher up in loans). Their system screwed up on our auto app so they lost that business to DCU. Just offered us the same rate. I'd been told by more than one person there they couldn't convert my 14.99% non-rewards no-frills Visa to their better School Employees card. She did it and gave the best 7.5% rate. So for potential low rate needs, we've got that with no BT fee. So the low rate thing from DCU isn't as high on my list. The cash advance part is nice though. But maybe we'll sit tight for now. Or maybe we'll still take them up on the second School Employees card offer we have sitting on DH's account. But getting this rate lowered (assuming it goes through as she said) makes me MUCH more comfortable.

Thanks for all the food for thought.

I've got Penfed on my radar still because I like they way they give you those offers. I also see their HELOCs look pretty good too. But not today. Smiley Happy

I am glad you got the auto loans from DCU as a backup.  7.5 % is a very good rate from CU.  Some CU offer low rate cash advance, BT wihout any fee. You need to check around.

Penfed is something to think about. They are a good cu.  Let me know if you need any help.

Re: DCU CC Question

Since you are going to wait, keep an eye open on your DCU pre-approvals next quarter.    I get two pre-approvals.  One is for Auto, Boat, RV or motorcycle.  It is for up to 40k, with an APR "as low as" 1.74%.  The other is for their Visa Platinum Credit card with a CL up to 10k,  APR "as low as" 8.5%.  It would be nice if they had firm APR's.   I assume they are the standard pre-approval's most people get.

They are listed under "Account manager->Accept Loan Preapproval"

Thanks so much! That's what I was wondering.

ETA: Found the area on my online account. Of course no offers now. When you say 'next quarter', what schedule are they on? Like end of March, June, Sept and Dec?

Re: DCU CC Question

I joined DCU last August.  I didn't get any offers in Sept.  On Jan 1, I saw the two pre-approvals I mentioned earlier, good through March 31.  Ditto for April 1.  Those pre-approvals were good through June 30.   The current pre-approvals, say they are good through 9/30.

I don't know if you should expect them next quarter or the first of the year.   It is nice to have a pre-approval before applying, but even with the pre-approval, you can be denied after the HP.  Conversely, you can be approved without a pre-approval.  If they offered you the credit card when you joined, there is a very good chance you are still pre-qualified, it just doesn't show in your account.

If you are really looking for a high limit credit card, I don't know if DCU is the right CU for you.  10k seems to be the common maximum credit limit for their credit cards.  They are a great credit union to be a member of, but there isn't a perfect CU.

Thanks for the great explanation. And "They are a great credit union to be a member of, but there isn't a perfect CU." isn't that the truth!

(But I think I'm really going to like their mobile app. It seems snappier and prettier than my current CU.)

Re: DCU CC Question

You should be able to use that pull from the car loan to apply for other loan products (including CC) for up to 30 days. My file was crap and I managed to get a 5k limit.

FYI the score cutoffs for the APR are 675-699 11.5%, 700-729 9.5%, 730+ 8.5%. Whereas with auto loans, you can get their best rate with a 675.

Re: DCU CC Question

Great info, thanks.

Did you have your 5-digit limits at the time they gave you $5k? How was the limit they gave you based on others at the time?

(I suppose it doesn't matter given it won't be a pull, but still curious if you don't mind.)

My highest CL at the time was Discover at 8000. My utilization was out of wack, something like 40% overall. And many of my CC accounts were less than a year old. I think you'll be in good shape.

Hey Tortoise,

I applied yesterday to DCU. I got 2 car loans refinance thru them (One loan was 4.04% and the other 3.09%) both down to 1.74% and got a DCU Visa for 15K. Also they did it on two pulls (Membership and everything else). I have heard of people getting higher limits than 15K though.
