DP's for AMEX: Time between 1st approval and new prequals?

Hey All,

I am ecstatic about my new Amex HH Surpass I got 8/26 and have been using it via digital wallet since it has not even arrived yet. Wondering if you all who have multiple Amex cards can contribute some data points about how long it was after your first approval did the pre-approvals/ qualifications start rolling in?

Not gonna app soon or anything just wanted to know when to expect it and help others like me scouring the forum to get a mention of this topic.

Stuff that would be helpful:

1) Original Card and  date of approval:

2) Time until new offers arrived on portal:

               a) If none yet, then how old is your card now:

3) Original Card starting line:

4) New card if you apped the pre-approvals:

               a) Or if you apped again without pre-approvals:

5) New card starting line:

6) Credit score (at original approval and if it was different upon new offers arriving):

7) Miscllaneous info/advice for all those looking to obtain multiple cards from AMEX in the future:

*** If this is not interesting to anyone else, feel free to close the thread. I just see random mentions of this but not a centralized DP list.

Thank you all in advance.

Re: DP's for AMEX: Time between 1st approval and new prequals?

There is a lot that’ll figure into this, especially when scores are in the 600s, such as the presence and status of any derogs, AoOA, utilization, and the like. With 750 scores a lot of that will be of lesser importance. That being said, this is how it shook out for me:

1) Original Card: Delta Gold and Hilton base card, less than 90 minutes apart, 11/2018
2) Time until new offers arrived on portal: 6 months
3) Original Card starting line: $1k each
4) New card if you apped the pre-approvals: I apped BCP and Gold from the preapprovals in May 2019; however, I cold-apped and received Surpass without a preapproval before that, in 3/2019
5) New card starting line: $2k (Surpass and BCP), NPSL for Gold with initial $15k POT limit
6) Credit score (at original approval and if it was different upon new offers arriving): at first approval EX638, Surpass was 640s, BCP and Gold were 656
7) Miscllaneous info/advice for all those looking to obtain multiple cards from AMEX in the future: use the preapprovals. Not having one does not mean that you won’t get a card, but your odds are very good if you do have one. The good thing is that after a couple of statements, it’s VERY likely that future apps, whether or not approved, will be SP. If you get approved with a limit under $2k, you may be better off not apping other cards until your scores improve, as there are many examples that seem to show that $1k and less SLs are hard to grow (FWIW I was declined for a CLI at 61 and 91 days). Most of this is common knowledge on this board if you’ve been here awhile but maybe it’ll help others in the future.

Amex has been great for me, even without any increases yet. I understand why, I don’t hold it against them, and I can justify most of my spending through their cards. Working on a drastic decrease from my current 37% UTI down to under 7%, with several payoffs. That should all boost my score considerably if it all comes through, and that should up my odds a lot for growing my lines. Just get the cards you can use, treat them well, pay on time, and Amex can be an amazing lender.

This is comforting to hear and it seems you are right. More than most banks AMEX seems to really value the relationship aspect of a profile. I am hoping this thread grows because I know most people (unless brand new like me) don't generally stop at just one AMEX card.

There is a lot of knowledge to be gained on this thread.

1) Original Card: Hilton Honors (no AF)

2) Time until new offers arrived on portal: None showing yet

3) Original Card starting line: $20k

4) New card if you apped the pre-approvals: N/A

5) New card starting line: N/A

6) Credit score (at original approval and if it was different upon new offers arriving): 774-804 (FICOs)

7) Miscllaneous info/advice for all those looking to obtain multiple cards from AMEX in the future: Below

I decided to post since this peaked my interest. I just app'd for the no AF HH card (8/22) for 100k points for $1k spend. I went this route so that I can then upgrade it to the Surpass in 13 months and get another SUB on same card number. I app'd for this through the prequals since it was elevated over the public offer. I heard that I can't upgrade my card within the first year since you can't go from no AF to a fee in the same year. I might check with Amex to verify that if I see an upgrade offer come by before 12 months.

Anyway, I just checked the site after reading this and it doesn't list anything and takes me to the card pages to apply for others. I'll have to follow this and see if it opens back up in 6 months.

Re: DP's for AMEX: Time between 1st approval and new prequals?

@TSlop Awesome! and wow what a starting line!!! I went straight for the surpass because at the time the SUB was 130k points + a free weekend night for $4k spend in 4 months.

I had no idea that you could upgrade and do the SUB again, great bit of info there. See... This is why threads like this are important. Definitely keep us updated if anything pops up for pre-quals over the coming weeks and thank you for contributing.

Re: DP's for AMEX: Time between 1st approval and new prequals?

I would add in the original post how old first card is if there aren't any pre-approvals or if people haven't decided to get a 2nd card yet.
