Delta Platinum Upgrade?

So I received an email from Amex today preapproving me for a Delta Platinum Skymiles card with 15K skymiles with 1K spend in the first three months. I already hold the Gold version of this card, which is siting at 10.5K CL. Is this card worth the increased AF? I like the idea of more skymiles for sure (building up miles for a hawaii trip), but I wonder if Amex will do a hard pull on my report if I upgrade.....

Re: Delta Platinum Upgrade?

Personally I wouldn't pay the increased fee unless you were certain you were going to be able to fully utilize the additional perks. The 15k miles are just not worth it, IMO.

It is not a HP to upgrade, just a higher AF. The platinum also still has a yearly companion pass (for one domestic flight per year, your companion can fly for free +taxes). I think the earning structure is slightly different for Platinum (you earn miles and  MQM - Medallion Qualification Miles) - I'm not well-versed on what the difference is, but think Platinum might be better for frequent fliers, who fly Delta a lot. For the casual traveler, the Gold is probably better - unless the value of the companion certificate outweighs the increased AF.

15k SkyMiles? or 15k Medallion Qualification Miles?

The offers for the Delta Platinum, particularly if you already have the Delta Gold, tend to include some amount of SkyMiles, and a separately listed amount of Medallion Qualification Miles. For frequent fliers, which the Platinum tends to be more geared toward, those MQM can make the difference when trying to get to the next Medallion level, which must be achieved in one calendar year. They will roll over extra miles beyond that Medallion level requirement, but one has to get to that level to achieve the rollover and benefits.

If you are interested in the Delta Platinum, shop carefully for the best bonus reward. 15k miles, plain miles, is not very good. Like all AMEXes, you get one bonus per card, ever.

If the offer is for 35,000 regular SkyMiles plus 15,000 MQM, now there is an offer that may be worthwhile, presuming you need the MQM.

For those who have the Delta Platinum, one of the bonuses is, if you spend $25,000 on the card in a year, you not only get the 25,000 SkyPesos, you get a bonus of 10,000 SkyMiles additional, plus 10,000 MQM, so for frequent travellers, another boost to those Medallion levels. The Companion ticket is also a good perk, pretty much clearing the $195 AF.

Imo. If you are going to spend $450 a year for AF why not make it a platinum instead of that. you will still get 2 miles per dollar. not worth it in any way. keep your gold card. Why only 15k miles Yikes!!!! Honestly even the platinum would be a reach for me to justify $450. but if you travel a lot and fly delta frequently. then yes may be a value for you. But i still say. No way.Maybe im thinking about the reserve with the $450. 195 AF is not too bad.
