Uhhh wouldn't disputing the incorrect DOB with the credit bureaus be much more effective? I mean ultimately you don't want any erroneous information on your credit report no?
At the risk of sounding 'preachy' I'll add that the longer you put off correcting your DOB the more hassle it will be.
I had a family member in a similar situation... it wasn't impossible to fix, although it would have been much simpler to have corrected it earlier on rather than 'kick the can' down the road.
Tell me about it.. IRS has my DOB as 12/13/YY vs. 12/31/YY so each year I file my taxes I gotta use 12/13 vs/ 12/31.. Someone typeed it wrong ALONG time ago and tried to fix it once and ya no very fruitful, will try again one of these years before I gotta collect social security if it still exists when i retire
Ugh... what a PITA! 
I have a data point specific to social security... my family member had to make a trip to the local SS office and show them proof in person of the correct DOB (her date was off by a day) but other than the "road trip" it was said to be fairly painless. Since the update at the SS office all interaction with the IRS (at least that I've seen) has reflected the new/corrected DOB.
If I come across any data points on somebody making the correction with the IRS I'll be sure to share.
Side note: In my relatives case, it was an insurance company that initially caught the discreptancy.
