Discover 2nd Card Preapproval Less Than a Year

I noticed a new trend with Discover... used to be that you had to wait a year to get a 2nd card with them. But, now I am noticing many people trying for a 2nd card within the year time frame.

I tried the preapproval and was preapproved for both the Discover It and Discover Chrome. I did not bite as I am gardening until January for my second NFCU card (although I may bite after that for another year of cashback match!) 🤑

Of interest to note is that I have a Ch7 bk DC in October 2018, got my secured Discover in November 2018, and it graduated to a $2000 cl in June or July. That would make my first Discover Card now 10 months old.

Scores and other info in my sig.

I also was dc from bk7 in october, and I also got my Discover secured in November, but mine has not yet graduated. Smiley Sad next week will be statement 11 for me. Interestingly after reading your post I checked the prequal and it says I'm pre-approved for the Cash Back and Chrome. But i'm not interested in another card right now... i'd rather them just unsecure me, hoping it will be soon.

Re: Discover 2nd Card Preapproval Less Than a Year

I will be a year in Oct.  I too had the pre-quals BUT....that does not matter for a lot of ppl it seems.  I called in and asked about the pre-quals and the csr quickly told me she was glad I called.  I would have been instantly shot down.  1. because under one year 2. I started with a secured card.

I recommend calling in and inquiring about your situation before pressing "submit".

Its possible that even though someone's profile may qualify for a prequaled card, once the submit button is pushed, other criteria come into play that auto denies. Sort of a catch 22Smiley Wink. Best to play it safe and not apply til after 1 year with other card.

I just got the miles card after only 10 months with the cash back card. Close enough to a year I guess.

Yeah that to me is much better than 4 months in and trying. The thing about Disco cards, for many 1st year is dcb why try and dilute that with 2 cards, . Especially if they dont give dcb on second cardSmiley Wink

I'm curious about the "started with a secured card". If you started with a secured card are there different rules about getting a second card? What are they, did she elaborate?

She meant, those two rules go hand in hand.  Secured/unSecured has to wait one year to apply.  But......I still recommend calling in and asking for yourself.  We ALREADY know you can get a different answer to the same question twice.
