For awhile there was some reason to their madness...but now all bets are off for the most part...
From personal experience they like virginal credit ..Clean.. A bit on the thin side.... no baddies.. but at least a score generating unless its a student card... And at that time. they liked to be driven hard... but as the daily driver/highest balance in your wallet...
Part of me is thinking that Discover cards are starting to get stuck.. esp if they are secured cards... Used to be a bit more leeway to grow out of the box... But not so much these days... Still my highest limit card in my wallet...
Feel bad for folks working their way up and some of the heavy hitters. Know im fortunate enough to be on Discos good vs bad list ....

Yep got my miles up to 4250 a few days ago approaching a year old in 3 months.. I got approved initially for a 1250 limit when my average limit is medium limit is 17k+.. Several at 35k and then the lowest Cash+ from Us Bank at 1.5k, but most of my cards are in the 20-25kish range. So hard to really like them when they approve you for a limit that I can spend easily on a weekend out on the town and considering it is suppose to be a "travel" card even though it simply is a cash back card one can barely book an airline ticket with my SL lol.. Obviously depends on where one is going. So ya they don't like a people with alot of credit out the gate as it is alot of risk vs. little reward (Being they won't be swipped much as they know you have better cards and aren't willing to throw a 20k-30k approval off the bat). I will just be happy if I get the card to 10k and let it remain there as really no need for them. I certainly understand others loyalty to them though when certain people they show the red carpet to such as yourself
FWIW, anything above a $10k limit (heck, probably even $5k) is overkill for Discover outside of Year 1 unless you have some major 5% rotating category spend. One can only spend so much on a rotating category, though.

Actually Discover can be quite a good BT card.. or a 0% apr on new purchases card.... after the first year.. Both might make having a 10K limit quite handy....
I've had a Discover Chrome Card for 6 months with an $1000 limit, though I don't need an increase I'm just wondering when are new accounts able to get CLI?

I suppose so. I'm a Transactor that's never had the thought of a BT cross my mind, nor do I consider APRs at all since I never pay any interest. I could see some value in what you said for those that do, though.
Good advice in this thread. I was fortunate in my timing with them. It was one of my first cards after my Chapter 13 fell off so I was able to get 10k. However, I was stuck there for months with an occasional $500 increase. (I called that the $500 train. I rode it for about six months.) I finally just gave it up and didn't ask for anything for about eight months. When I asked again I chatted with them. They asked me if anything had changed in my profile and I had recently married so they gave me a giant increase. I am now at 32k and have no plans to ask for more. It is possible to get to high levels after a financial disaster such as mine. For some cards, though, such as Citi or BofA, it is still painful for me.
Rebuilding is a painful process. I had so many inquiries and creditors don't like that. As my inquiries fall away I am finding that I get credit, offers in the mail and online. Even though I don't take them, it feels good to get them. Good luck to you. I know how hard it is to be patient. MYFICO is a great place to learn. I am still learning.
Can you elaborate a bit more on the CLI surrounding getting married? From the sound of what you wrote, it's like they said "Ok, here's a CLI for getting married" which doesn't really make sense to me. Perhaps you can explain a bit more about the nature of the conversation you had from that chat with Discover?
