Re: Discover Card pulled a fast one and im stuck

I gave Discover the boot when shortly after I got their card, they decreased my credit limit by half.  Which put me at the limit.  Really? Is that how you treat your new customers? I quickly paid it off and closed it. Didn't even care about the score hit from closing an account.

Yes, lesson learned. And, also, don't expect anyone else to carefully review any application screen. Do it yourself, and then decide to wait or decide to app.

Calling to ask a CSR if you can get a card is asking for a HP, in the CSR workflow. They aren't really there to help you make any decisions about applying.

There is a positive outcome to this: You now know for certain that you didn't get a Discover card. The HP likely stays, likely should have been incurred anyway, and now you can garden in peace while you work on improving your scores.

Don't give up on Discover, they have good offers once you get a card. I've gotten many BT offers, low APR purchase offers, the 10% Apple Pay offer going now, 10% back on spend offers, but you do have to be clear about what the CSR hears, what you hear, and what you actually receive.

Also don't be like CA and many others and waste a HP each and every month be to declined, unless you don't mind wasting HP's.. Make sure you credit profile can support it obviosuly as well as Discover is a very very weird lender and they don't think twice to decline people in the the 700's if they see one thing they might not like whether it is a 6.8 year old late or 6.8 year old paid CA/CO or a few accounts within x amount period of time, these all can be reasons for denial on the other side of the spectrum they will approve someone .5-1 year out of BK7... Very strange lender.  This is why they are on the bottom of my list for applying for as I have great cards now and about 90% sure I would be turned down due to an old paid CO's and old lates.  No one can really make sense of them as a lender or find a true pattern to them other than they like thin and clean profiles aka people new to credit, this is the only known thing about them.

Re: Discover Card pulled a fast one and im stuck

Look at it from the lenders point of view for a sec.....

You called to ask if you would be approved for a card.... but wait, I don't want to apply, I just want to know if I'm approved.

HUH???  For the most part, the only way a lender will tell you if you are (or will be) approved is by pulling your credit.  If you pick up the phone, just expect it to be a hard pull.  Even if everyone tells you it will be a soft pull, expect a hard pull.  If you don't want the hard pull, don't ask, don't apply.

Okay, off my soapbox now....

I don't know what your profile looks like, but a hardpull isn't a big deal.  Having a ton of them might be, but 1 more or less isn't going to have much impact on anything.  While they are listed on your report for 2 years, the score impact only last 6 - 12 months, if there is ANY score impact due to the hard pull.  Also, discover is a single bureau pull.

Personally, I think disputing the pull is likely to cause you problems down the road.  Next time you apply, the computer will flag you as a complainer and deny you for the fun of it.  Okay, Discover might not do this, but why take the risk over a pull?????

Dan

Just trying to get my scores to rise from the dead......

Wait.... I think I just heard a heartbeat!

Re: Discover Card pulled a fast one and im stuck

Hard pulls seem to stay on for quite a while. I have 17 right now. How is that possible

and the thing about it is most of these pulls are not even necessary. I'm asking them a question, and they're doing hard pulls

i dont know why I received a hard pull when I'm just apartment hunting. I don't know why I needed to do a hard pull, just to get a checking account because it comes with an investing account. So I'm actually annoyed with the ones I have, but the count will probably never go to 0

If you include apartment and bank accounts, you have to make some distinctions, categorize them:

How many are apartment hunting,

how many for checking,

how many if you were buying a car,

how many if you are looking for a mortgage (hopefully mutually exclusive with apartment hunting)

and how many you got when you applied for a credit card.

If you are calling a credit card company to ask questions, and seeing multiple HP from that, please expand on that. What sort of questions? Which credit card companies, or if not a CCC, then who are you asking the questions of?

My first mistake was signing up for CK i should of known they are full of it, but when i was first cleaning up my past they were free and listed everything on my TU report.  Well i should of listened to the reviews about how CK places odds on approval for certain cards based on ones credit profile.  CK indicated i had very good chances of applying for the Discover It card, but i remembered reading on another board that i could see if i preqaul without a HP so i went to their site putting my info in and was given a few offers to choose from one being the It card CK said i had a good chance of being approved.  Well i decided to call Dicover and ask if this was truly the case or was this just some "other offers i may be interested in" like you get from Cap 1 and AMEX.  I asked the CSR if she could pull up the same offer screen i was shown and tell me if i prequal.  She asked me my name and SS #   STOP i said i dont want an APP i just want to see if i am prequaled and she said she understood.  She put me on a brief hold and when she came back on she said sorry at this time we cant approve you for a Discover card.  I said ok thinking she only did a prequal soft pull well a day later i get an alert from the infamous CK saying a new INQ was reported it was Discover they had ran an app on me using the information i put into the offer page.  I was pissed so i called them and basically got told the app was run and denied and if you want the HP off your report contact EQ or TU since they pulled both.  Of course they both said Discover had to remove it and they wont so lesson learned i will never apply or deal with Discover they are as crooked as they come.  Smiley Mad

Don't be mad at Discover, it was the unscrupulous rep that was trying to meet their app quota. Personally, even if it was 6 months ago, and I knew on that recording that I told the rep that I was not interested in an application but a pre-qual soft pull, I would e-mail the highest position person with Discover that  I could find, and would write them a clear and precise explanation and ask for an investigation into that recording to verfiy my accusations that the rep went beyond my approval for a HP.

When ever I call to apply, they always ask "Do I Have Your Permission to Pull Your Credit" and when you say yes, they hit the button.

I highly doubt that if you let Discover know what happened, and as you say never gave them permission to do so, Discover isn't interested in damaging your credit report unless it is valid, and will investigate and if you never gave permission, they will remove that HP.

A company is only as good as the people who work there, and some have bad apples like everywhere else. Hold that rep accountable!

Another tip is prequals don't usually ask income.

Usually asks for full name, address, social, credit rating(good, fair, excellent, or rebuilding), and type of card you're interested in(ie travel, rewards, cashback).

Discover had to ask income/employment status for app.
