Discover It cancellation or naw?

Hey all! As I previously stated in another post, I was approved for the Discover It Student card for $500. At the time I didn't know the difference in that and a regular Discover It card, until I posted it in this forum and someone asked why I applied for the student card. I am much older, and in the process of rebuilding after medical issues that cost me my perfect credit. Well the answer is, I am a student however, I have income to sustantiate a regular card. They pulled my lowest score Ex 647. When I called Disco to inquire about a regular Disco It card, they said I answered the student question that's why I got that card and the low limit. She suggested that if I want to apply for the other card that I should wait for the student card, activate it, cancel it and then apply for the other card and MAYBE, I would be approved, no guarantees. Well the card came today, what do you guys think I should do? I need to hear from the pro's. I've already been hit with a HP. I don't want to take the chance and not have either card, and 2 hard pulls. Also during the same time frame I was approved for the Apple Card with a 3k SL. Thanks

I wouldn't imagine that a PC is an option to go from the Student to It card, but I suppose you could ask.  Assuming you can't, your only other option would be to app for the It whenever you think the time is right.

Would have to wait a year if student is kept open.

Re: Discover It cancellation or naw?

Congratulations on your new found liquidity!

I have reason to believe that getting the student card might have been a positive for you. You said it yourself that they got your worst score and you still got approved. I am hearing that the regular card needs something closer to 700-720 for approval right now due to tightening during the pandemic. They would have gotten the same 649 and denied you for the regular one I believe. Also I think the 500 is the smallest they give out on student cards or very close to it. Also you can only have 1 student card so it is better to fill it early. Anyway thanks to SP CLi's your card can grow quickly so do not think your SL is your final CL. I only have a student card myself from Discover and the limit is quite comparable to a regular card in my collection but I cultivate mine. I suggest you stop trying to compare different cards from different lenders that you got and instead consider cultivating the product you actually have.

@Ladyk06This statement, "I've already been hit with a HP. I don't want to take the chance and not have either card, and 2 hard pulls." is a powerful one to really consider.

Since the CSR said there is no guarantee of approval there is definitely a chance that you may end up with zero cards from them and 2 wasted HPs. Sometimes a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. (it's better to be content with what you have than to risk losing everything by seeking more.)

BUT then again nothing ventured nothing gained.

When I got my Disco last year I had a score around 650 and got a sl of 1000 which doubled a little over a year later and they pulled EQ so there's a chance they may not pull your lowest score at EX and your chances could be slightly better for approval.

One good thing is they don't TRIPLE pull like Cap1 where you would end up wasting 6 HPs instead of 2 if denied SO if that's not a major factor then I would app for it.

THEN AGAIN You could always just nuture the one you have and wait for a cli 12 months from now and then also app for a second card when your scores are better. 500 is enough to charge and pay to show them how you can treat the account and place you in a even better light for additional accounts.

Good luck with your decision and let us know how it comes out.

Re: Discover It cancellation or naw?

Thank you all! I appreciate your suggestions. I will activate this card and cultivate it for a year. The CSR did tell me that I wouldn't get a CLI for 12 months. I'll use it often and take advantage of the perks until then.

Good decision IMO. I have the Discover student card and got an auto-CLI after the 12th statement cut. Treat them well and they will treat you well.
