You can try and recon, though I don't know that they will since you already have a card with them and maybe they don't feel comfortable giving you another. But it doesn't hurt to try!

So I went ahead and apped after some advice and thought, I need a card with a higher limit for some bigger purchases for school.
I have a 639 fico, because of two baddies (which I'm going to pay off! I moved in with my mom while I'm in school an working for help with the kids and getting debts paid off)
Discover declined me because I already have a secured card with them:
"THE NUMBER OF ACCOUNTS WITH DISCOVER FINANCIAL SERVICES"
Should I call for a recon? Should I ask to have the regular discover it instead of student?
blegh. Knots in my stomach I tell ya!
Recon is almost useless with Discover, they tend to stick with whatever the computer says. It's possible to have more than one card with them as I have 2. I'm going to guess it's the baddies that they declined you for.
Sorry about the denial. I don't think recon will do any good. How about a Capital One Journey card?

Agreed. Once in a blue moon will they recon. They can tell you that its because you have a card. But if you got a 639 fico. Was that on EQ? which bureau. most likely they pull Eq and something is holding your score down that is not good.

Good news everyone!
I didn't get the recon to go through (boo! But it's ok, I'm still in with them)
I talked to someone first who had no idea what I meant. They transferred me to someone else because they said a student card is the only card any person can have with discover, and since I had secured I couldn't have the student. Well that isn't true, I ended up talking to a credit analyst who told me you can have plenty of accounts with discover, and that you can have more than one after every year. So if you are a new customer, until your card is 1 year old, they do not allow any more card apps to go through (did not verify if this was just for secured but it would make sense to work only for secured). He looked at my baddies and said they weren't terrible and I meet the guidelines for an unsecured card except for the fact I have the secured (am working on baddies currently because I don't want them hindering my future mortgage!)
im just really really happy it wasn't the baddies.
Not true at all, I have 2 of their cards both within a year.
