When I was first finished with my rebuilding, I got a mailer from Discover saying I was pre-approved and figured it was a firm invitation. I used the code on the mailer and was still denied with scores in the 700s. If you search the forums, you'll find out that Discover's mailers are not firm pre-approvals, so take it for what it is. You didn't screw up by not using the mailer, you likely would have been denied either way. Wait until the baddies fall off, then try again.

Great insight. Thanks for sharing. I'll stay away from Discover for the time being.

Re: Discover Mailer, pull the trigger?

I just called recon to just see. They're ridiculous. They said since it's "day 2," they can restart my application but it would be another inquiry since it's "day 2." I applied last night late. And they consider it "day 2" b/c it's a new day.....what kind of people are running these underwriting departments....use business sense.

I'm not sure that Discover does recons, but maybe you could at least call them back and inquire about their secured card since you were denied the regular one? They do offer a secured card, but they usually give you the offer immediately after being denied. Not sure if you'd be interested, but I thought I'd throw the idea out there anyway. Sorry about your denial. I was denied by them twice, both times the offered me the secured verision and the second time I took them up on the offer. Although, I'm sure if I would have just waited until my 2 collections fell off (which happened about 2 months after I accepted the secured offer...lol) I would have been approved for the unsecured card. Oh well, lesson learned and at least I'm still able to take advantage of their double cashback deal.

Yeah. Unfortunately by the time my collections fall off I won't have a chance to do the double cash back deal. Btw. I posted about CSP. Would appreciate your input Smiley Happy

Re: Discover Mailer, pull the trigger?

As stated many times Discover is bi-polar.. They approve people pretty much right out of BK sometimes and others they will turn down with 7 years out of BK.. Approve people with 640's with baddies and deny people with 750ish credit scores and the likes..  They make absolutely no sense in who they approve and who they deny.. I would never waste a HP on them as They got one out of me about 1.5 years ago and most likely will never get another one out of me due to they are all over the board on whom they approve and choose not to.. Somone can have 5 collections a slew of lates a tax lien and get approved while another with a completly clean report it the 700's will be denied..  They are just weird, plain and simple (at least to me from what I read).  Plus really don't dig the rotating category cards as I have the freedom and that plays alot nicer with my CSP to outweigh the discover in my case by a good margin

Agree completely credit curiosity. Just got approved for CSP today, a card I have been targeting since rebuilding. Forget Discover 😎
