Why is it so hard to get Pre-Approved for a Discover Card.
I have tried that sight the beginning of each month for the last four months. Its still a no go for me. I do get preapproved for the secure card, but nothing else.
It could be for any number of reasons. Do they cite their reasons in their denials? I can't remember. Have you burned Discover in the past?

I have not received any denials as of yet, just a basic secure card pre-approval. Fortunately I have never burned them. I am in pretty good shape as far as burn goes. My issues were cell phones, co-signing for things that I should have not. I paid all of my credit card lenders back. I just had a lot of collections when I started back my rebuild. I am now down to two baddies, one will age delete in 5 months, and the other will age delete end of 2022. Hopefully I work the latter one out, but I must wait a few months for the sol.

That's a bummer, it's hard to say why they are not offering you unsecured at this time, but obviously they just aren't feeling comfortable yet. Their pre-approval tool is generally reliable. I will say as far as secured cards, Discover has to be one of the very best ones out there. It has the potential to graduate in as a little as 7 months. If they're a lender you would like to get in with, starting with a secured card is not a bad way to go.
If you were to cold app, you might be borderline for acceptance based on your current scores. Discover pre-approvals mostly identify more "sure thing" approvals. So you could roll the dice and app now, and you may still be approved. If you are looking for a pre-approval, you'll probably have to get closer to 700 particularly on Experian.

This reads like "Go app and see what happens. Be a DP." I myself had a really borderline approval for a regular Discover It Cash Back card at $1,000. I was approved back in Oct '19 and it has only grown to $2,500 and is the runt of all of my cards. Luckily, I really like Disco and am willing to stick it out with them. I'm sure at some point they'll warm up to me and let my card grow. I always think Disco is a lender that is worth having in your wallet. They're so versatile and good for every stage of wherever you are in your credit journey.
@Anonymous , The fact that you have baddies on your report would be a good explanation. Theyre offering you the secured version as a way to build a relationship/give you a shot while also protecting themselves. I applied back in June 2019 and they denied me. The only baddies i had were old student loan lates which were 5 yrs old at the time. Fast forward to October 2020 (still have the lates but at this point they are 6 years old) and discover prequalified me with 11.99 APR. I applied and was approved for 4500 SL. So in my case, it was just time that needed to pass i guess? My scores had risen a bit also bc i took care of my other accts. I guess my point is, give them time. Keep checking prequal & something will eventually pop up!

That is good info, its strange to see how some with lower credit scores and open collections that have been approved for this card. I guess it is something in my profile that they do not like. I do have four credit cards right now. Three are secured an I have had the secured cards for going on 11 months. Never late, never really carried a balance but for one month. I have one unsecured card for three months. What are your DP now, and what were yours when you first applied for the discover card?

Waiting until I get close to 700 makes more sense. I am not too far off. Maybe a year or so away. @rostrow416 what was your profile when you cold apped?

I do want discover in my wallet, it is just a matter of when they find favor in my profile. I know there is still work to do. When the work meets a better profile and a better pre-approval we will be a match.

If you want in with Discover, why not take the secured card? It will insecure in a few months.
