@Anonymous this is a working theory but I think it depends on if you have baddies or not. In my case, I had plenty of baddies, FICO less than 600, and nothing going in my favor right then so not prequal for me. It seems like those with thinner files and minimal baddies are more likely to be approved for the secured card. I say this based on the results I’ve seen from myself, my mother, my gf, and my brother. All of which have Disco. But we all know Disco can be bipolar too haha.
That may be, but in my case, I had 6 derogatories about 2 years old when I applied. I did only have 2 cards at the time. A year and a year and a half respectively.
I would request a free credit report from Experian (this is possible since you were denied credit based on their report). Scrutinize your report and try and figure out which negative account is cited. If you find it is not yours, dispute it. Best wishes.
So I did the prequalify today on the regular Discover site and it came back and offered secured. I may do that around the 1st but the question I have is if I go ahead and apply around the 1st for a regular Discover IT card and if not approved would it be changed to the secured card and continue the process or do a second application at that point and hp.
There was a time when you apped for the regular and they would offer you the secured but nowadays you app for the secured you get the secured, you app for the unsecured and get denied.. you just get hard pulls....

That's exactly what I needed to know. Might check prequal again if anything changes since I just started collectionshield360 or just do the secured at that time.
What im not sure of is if anyone has recently been able to talk Disco into offering them a secured card after a denial... ... Just know its no longer automatic.....

Don't wait too long if you want the secured card or any Discover you prequal for. I did prequal on Sunday 09/09 and said prequal was good until 09/16. I jumped on it on Monday, which I am glad I did for the secured card.
Unfortunately I don't get paid until 9/28 so I'll have to try again then. I think you have to do the deposit as soon as you apply if I read it right.
