Re: Discover Vs Apple Card who’s more generous with Increases

I'd say Apple between these two, but neither is really known for rapid growth. Well, that is, Discover CAN grow rapidly for some people, based on unknown factors, while growing slowly if at all for other people, also based on unknown factors. If anybody ever figures out Discover's logic, that person should write a book, because we have not cracked the code yet on this board.

In my case, I opened a secured Discover last May. It had a $1,000 CL last December when it unsecured. Its new unsecured CL was $1,500. A few months ago, I got a $300 CLI. Then I got another $300 CLI a few weeks ago. So, my Discover CL is now $2,100. I opened my Apple Card in December. It had a $5,000 CL when opened. I applied a couple of times for CLIs on it without using it much (few dollars here and there), and was denied. I deliberately ran several hundred dollars through it, tried again, and was approved for a $1,500 CLI to $6,500. I don't know if it was due to the spend or due to time passing, probably both.

Good luck!

Thanks for adding those data points for OP, @KJinNC.  Every little bit helps.  Your situation with the secured card and the very slow growth is the kind of scenario I was cautioning about on OP's Discover card growth.  I think he might experience the same thing.  However, he does have the advantage of the account being older than yours, around 36 months old versus 16 months old.

Your Apple card experience is very typical and I feel pretty sure the CLI had much more to do with spend than age.  They gave you a 30% raise ($1500/$5000) which is around average for most of the CLI reports I've seen.  Usually around 25% to 30% of existing CL is a typical increase.  Those who put super heavy spend on the card may see a single raise go higher.  And as @NoMoreE46 reported, using 133% of his CL eventually doubled his credit limit with raises like you experienced.  So if you want more in a few months, it's worth trying that again!

Thank you for the data points it's much appreciated - discover is quite stingy it seems. Going to make the apple card my main driver for a bit and see how it grows since I've seen them being pretty decent lately with the CLI. Thanks again !

Certainly.  You can also try to grow Both cards by focusing your spend on the maximum % back by category and issuer.

For example, fuel: during Apr May June of 2021, Disco is offering 5% back at all gas stations.  If you purchase fuel, then use your Disco for that category in that 2nd quarter.   Otherwise, use Apple pay- specifically at Exxon Mobil stations  (if this is an option as EM app integrates AP nicely)  for all of the other months to get 3% back.

My DW finds this optimization strategy too burdensome but I know you are willing to put the effort in.

Good luck on growing your

Card(s).

@NoMoreE46

Unfortunately, Disco isn't giving CLI to any cards less than 1 yr old. It's a pandemic policy.

I'm not sure how that would apply to graduated cards, like @Anonymous's situation though.

Re: Discover Vs Apple Card who’s more generous with Increases

Well, as mentioned earlier in the thread, I have received two small CLIs from Discover recently - a little more than a year after I opened the secured card, but only 6-8 months after the card unsecured. So if this is a Discover policy (I have no knowledge of that policy beyond this thread), I suppose the clock starts when the card was opened as secured, meaning the OP will be fine with regard to that policy.

In general, for anyone who hasn't realized yet, Discover's decisions make about as much sense as if they roll dice, bet which rat will make it through a maze the fastest, read chicken bones, etc. It's really difficult to find, or offer, advice on Discover aside from obviously always paying your bill on time (even at that, people with lates sometimes appear to have better outcomes with Discover than people with no lates, but I'd still recommend paying on time ...). Formerly secured cards seem to be limited or bucketed somehow, but nobody knows the details (does this last forever, or how long?), except that the limitations seem to be on the card, not on the person. You may have better results if you open a new Discover, a tactic I have considered many times, and would do if I weren't going for a gold spade.

Re: Discover Vs Apple Card who’s more generous with Increases

Hey @lyTENciL ,

So Discover won't allow any CLIs unless the account is at least 12 months old?

Correct. Accounts become eligible for CLI on day one of 13th month. Current policy since at least April 2020.

Source: four CSRs and one analyst, spoken to by phone and chat variously between Apr-Oct this year. When asking, I had FICO8s 840-850, 6 fig income, baby limit but hundreds in monthly spend. Always told there was nothing they could do until after 12 months, and analysts can't override it.

Thanks @lyTENciL.

This is great info and I think you should post this detail in a new specific thread!
