Last week I went to Discover to see if there were any cards offered to me and one was. (This was not the 'we think you'll like, those were beneath this offer, it was one I was 'matched' with).
I guess we all know that these 'matches' aren't chiseled in stone, but I gave it a shot anyway. It started processing and then stated they needed more info, I gave it and it started processing again and took me to a new window that crashed. I called and they checked and said they would be happy to approve me with a co-signer.
I've never had that happen, either decline or approve? I asked her what the reason(s) was that I couldn't be approved on my own since the site had matched we with that card and she said I would receive a letter in the mail explaining. I told her that I didn't want a co-signer and thanked her anyway.
Today I got the letter:
EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF CREDIT BUREAU INQUIRIES IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS.
EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF CREDIT BUREAU INQUIRIES IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS.
INSUFFICIENT CREDT HISTORY IN BANK REVOLVING ACCOUNTS
Type of Score: FICO
Your credit score: 700
Date: etc, etc
This information was provided to us by Equifax, Inc., a consumer reporting agency.
etc, etc
So, does the SP done on their website matching not take into account some of these things?
Lesson learned. Never ever rely on Discover's 'pre approval' web site. It's completely useless. They've matched my dog with cards before.
And on a more general note, even the 'good' preapproval' sites like Chase, Cap One, Amex and Citi are no guarantees. Just because they give you a preapproval it's no guarantee and you can be, and many are, declined.
Thank you, OmarGB9. I knew the bottom part 'based on info you gave' did that. I don't know why they bother getting your SSN, etc.

Seriously?
ya, thanks
THAT SUCKS! I did the same thing last year before I learned from myfico.
How many inquiries do you have, lets add to this thread so it can be a learning experience for others so they dont make the same mistake.
Discover's prequalification site is completely bogus. Meaningless.
Yeah, apparently Discover's prequal tool is a complete joke. Sorry to have that happen to you. A year or two ago I was getting constant mailers and was denied a couple times.
Last time I checked it, they offered the student card even though I'm not a student. I said screw it and was approved for a $6k it. There's no rhyme or reason with them.

To be fair to Discover, we're talking about a Dog who has never been late on a payment, and has a perfect DTI ratio.

Right.......a dog that doesn't even have a credit file .......still gets recommendations though.........Discover's prequal site sucks.......suprised that they do this given the level of customer service they provide. They're probably building a mailing list or something.
