Be wary of the Discover "pre-approval" portal. I have had a Discover chrome for 7 years and do get periodic CLI. However, I was pre-approved according to their pre-approval portal(soft pull) for a second card. All good, except they had me call in for additional information. Now they want a signed authorization to access my IRS records for income verification...No thanks!
Pre approvals don't automatically mean approved when/if you go ahead with the app. Likewise, lack of a preapproval doesn't mean you can't still be approved if you go ahead.
Also, the tax transcript request for income verification is quite commonplace with Discover these days - both for new and existing accounts.
Are there DP's that say that when applying for a second card and declining the income tax return request that Discover closes the original card as well?

That is exactly how I feel about it as well! I won't do it for any credit card companies.
@bzexec1 Unless you have something to hide, no harm to this check.
This information is for the benefit of the members of these forums. No need to take a veiled dig at a post. For your information, Discover does not request proof of income from the applicant, but rather have you sign a release for the IRS to provide the info. Maybe you haven't kept up with the news but the IRS is expanding to unprecedented levels. I for one, do not want them knowing who I am applying to-they know more than they need to already. Feel free to contact the IRS and let them know everything about your credit applications....
Let's place nice here please .
Just because one doesn't want to supply this doesn't mean one is hiding anything . I personally don't submit to those personally myself , as I don't think a credit card application warrants one but that's just me and no I am not hiding anything . A loan most certainly but a credit card ummm no .
But this has been happening more frequently with lenders and disco for the past year or so , we don't know what triggers it of course , some never gets asked .

I don't think anyone is taking a dig at you. Expressing opinions, but not attacking you. But yes, it's been well-documented that discover has been asking for these tax transcripts via the IRS for a couple of years now - it's not new.
I don't plan to open a second Discover card but just for curiosity, are there any acceptable ways (ie pay stubs etc) to prove income if your submit the tax transcripts but they aren't reflective of your current salary?

I don't think so, no. For a brief period when IRS was shut down due to COVID, bank statements could be substituted, but that ship has sailed AFAIK.
