Re: Discover unOfficial Data Points

Gotcha.  I feel like if Discover is the first card in someone's wallet or the only one someone takes on at some point (for the following year) that it can be of great use for the double CB promo period.  For me though, it was a bit underwhelming.  It's not Discover's fault persay, just that I took on several other CB cards at the same time as Discover, so my spend was going toward hitting those sign on bonuses, those categories as well, etc.  I've heard of people getting $500-$600 in CB match from Discover after their first year, where mine was about $220 I think.  My bonus from the Amex BCE was actually bigger and I got it in 3 months rather than waiting a year for example.  After the first year outside of the rotating categories, Discover comes quite irrelevant IMO.  I know there are Discover offers and such which I do need to look into, as austinguy907 has spoken very highly about them and the savings that can be attained through using them.

For me, it's not so much the double cash back during the first year as the fact that Discover offers 5% in revolving categories each quarter. Starting in October, they're giving 5% back on Amazon purchases, which is important to me because I shop frequently on Amazon. Of course, seeing that double cash back is active for me until next March, I'll end up actually getting 10% back on Amazon purchases during that quarter (if I figure correctly!).

Correct on the 10% back.  I agree completely that the first year with Discover is great and it gives you a lot of incentive to use the card.  After the first year though, it really just becomes a 5% rotating category card.  There's nothing wrong with that, but usage in Year 2 would most likely go down significantly for many people because of the promo ending.  In Year 1 the card could even be used as a daily driver, as it essentially would be a 2% CB card, but after Year 1 someone would move their general spend likely to a different card as many provide more than 1% CB.

Re: Discover unOfficial Data Points

Considering all of my other accounts and CLs...Discover may be on the chopping block at the end of November. I've earned a fair amount of cashback, but once my 0% APR promo and 2x CB expire...the low CL and weird CLI patterns make the card semi-useless and frustrating for me.

Amex BCE (if my 3x CLI next month doesn't fly) and Citi TYP (if my next CLI isn't 1k+) might join Disco in the CC grave as well.

Re: Discover unOfficial Data Points

I'll keep the card for balance transfers ect but I really can't even do that much with only 2500 CL....my profile is pretty clean....no bad marks...very low untilization and 772 Fico score.  Discover is nuts!
