When people call and ask a CSR what would help them get a CLI, it wouldn't surprise me if they just make things up like "well we like to see you spend 1k or at least close to it to be considered for a CLI".

Great marketing tool if AMEX is telling their CSR'S to tell card holders that. Lol!!

Yeah, im there with you.

I was only curious anyways, as i only put about $500/month on groceries and that is it. I do not need anymore credit since I'm over $100k in CLs

Once every 6 months CLI with Amex or 3X cli in 61 days? Now I'm confused....or is it that the 3X is only the first 61 days from opening the account? Can anyone clearify this please?

To me it sounds like this:  You can request 3X CLI on ANY AMEX card 61 days from account opening. BUT, you can only request 1 CLI from AMEX in a 6 month period.

So if you have 2 cards open at the same time, you'll only be granted a CLI on 1 of those cards at 61 days. Then, you must wait to request a second CLI regardless of how many different AMEX cards you have.

Someone more informed can correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: Experienced Amex members....does Amex even do this?! I need help!

A couple of days ago, I talked to CSR who encouraged me to apply for CLI, even after I mentioned him I had CLI in Apr.  I even mentioned 6 mths policy.   This guy still encouraged me and I did.

Obviously 7-10 days message.

Called another number and talked to someone in Credit dept.    As per this analyst, no matter how many accounts I have, one CLI per 6 months.    I dont think, once you get CLI,  there is no 60, 90 days....even for new cards.

When you look at it you can grow your $1k SL to $27K in just 14 months. Not bad

I'll be poster #83 to clarify. Smiley Wink

  • Some rare people appear to be eligible for a CLI immediately.
  • Many people are eligible for a CLI after 60 days (the after part is important, which is why you will see Amex days always referred to as 61, 91 and 181).
  • Any customer-initiated credit line increase that is granted resets a 180 day moratorium clock for all American Express cards held by the account holder. (An automatic CLI does not reset the clock.)
  • Any customer-initiated credit line increase that is declined with a reason other than something that translates to "you asked too soon" resets a 90 day moratorium clock for all American Express cards held by the account holder.
  • Credit lines can be reallocated between revolving American Express accounts online as often as every 30 days, as long as you leave a minimum of $500 per card.  However, many people report being unable to do so if the donor card (the one you are lowering the limit on) has been opened for less than one year.

Hope that helps.  I received a CLI on my Blue in January and applied for the SPG card in March.  I attempted a CLI at activation, at 61 days, and at 179 days - all denied because "American Express requires at least 180 days between credit line increases across all cards held by an account holder."  Unless you are denied for a real reason, your counter will not be reset.
