Hi everyone! I’m new to the forum, and wanted to get some advice and gauge my credit card strategy from those with more experience than me.
I’m an 18 year old college student, but was lucky enough to be added as an AU on an older sibling’s WF card 7 years ago, so had established good credit. However, wasn’t sure what cards I could get, given being an AU isn’t the same as being primary cardholder.
My current stats
EQ: 761. EXP: 755. TU: 759
AAoA: 2yrs 6 mo
Oldest Account: 6 yrs 10 mo
Income: $30k (including a college grant)
Current Cards
BofA Travel Rewards $1.5k CL, 1% utilization, 7mo old
One WF ($4k CLI) and one AMEX charge card I’m an AU on
I’ve gotten prequal for AMEX BCE, ED, BCP, and Gold. As well as Apple Card with $4k limit.
Would I actually be able to get any of the above cards? Theoretically I have a reasonably good score, but was still unsure. Since I’m an internationally based student, earning points and mikes (particularly MR points) makes a lot of sense. I was particularly interested in the Amex Gold or similar mid tier travel cards, which I’d spend $10k or so on in a year.
If not the Amex cards, what else could I get. Any of the mid tier or travel cards from Chase and Citi? Or am I completely over-reaching and should look at only no AF cards like Freedom Flex? Please let me know what you think.
hi, how are you.
you said you are 18 and 7 years ago you became an au on a relatives card? maybe i read it wrong.
the way i read it you were using a credit card at age 11, very impressive.
at 11 i was lucky if i could accomplish playing with my GI Joe.
Hi. Hahah imagine having a card at 11. From what .I understand, I wasn't actually added until 14, but WF reported the full account history, which makes it look like I had it at 11. Also, to be clear, I didn't get to touch the card until turning 16, and thank goodness as I was able to practice discipline and respjponsivle spending.
lol, even 14 is impressive.
i am in the midst of a rebuild so i dont have any advice but one of the pros will amble along at any moment.
The Apple Card pre-qual is basically 100% solid, so you can definitely get that if you'd like. Amex pre-quals are also solid, and I've seen DPs of students getting Golds and BCPs quite a bit, both on here and Reddit. If I were you, I'd go for a Gold, wait a few months, then maybe another Amex card. And after that, Apple Card, since the preapproval will always be there. But honestly, Amex's MR system can be quite limiting if you don't have the co-branded Plat cards and you don't have the flexibility for expensive aspirational trips. I'd suggest the CSP, but no idea if you'd be approved with such a thin profile. Getting a CFU/CFF might be a good start, then wait a few months and CSP, if you want to go down the Chase route.
