First post, chase and citi app advice.

Been lurking for a few months now and feel very much indebted to all of you who post. It has been an invaluable crash course in all things credit! Big thanks to everyone here!!

My credit history is a bit complicated, and I'd be happy to elaborate if it'd be helpful, but here are the current dp from Experian that I think you guys might find relevant...

2 current/open accounts- Quicksilver (500 sl, pc from Platinum, and about 8 months old) and CSR (17K sl and 1 month old)

AAoA- 4 yrs 3 mos

Oldest Account- 10 yrs 3 mos

Ex fico 8- 739

TU (via CK etc., so basically worthless) - 752

Those oldest accouts were closed just before I opened the Cap1. Zero derogatory marks. All payments on time. Utilization 0%. 3 inquiries over the last 2 years... the Chase, Cap1 and a declined Amex app a little over a year ago (long story).

Basically, I'm hoping to add a Chase FU and Freedom to fully take advantage of the UR possibilities, as well as the Citi DC (I need a card with a better limit than my QS, which I expect is permanently bucketed, that offers vcc) and then call it a day/garden.

Is applying for the Freedom and FU on the same day, maybe 3-4 months from now, a bad idea? And when might I attempt the Citi DC? Would be nice to do that while the $150 sub is still a thing. Looking to lean on the wealth of experience here and see if anyone has thoughts on a plan of attack for this... Thanks so much in advance!

And apologies to the mods if I'm posting in the wrong spot for this!!

Edit: Yikes, meant to post this in the apps thread. Sorry!

If you truly want both freedoms doing it the same day will be the best as it should only be one hard pull from Chase and throwing the Citi in the spree won't be a bad idea... I like to do a couple apps at the same time this way the issuers only see the new inquires of the other creditors and not see a bunch of new accounts if you were to spread out the apps .....Also good cause your AAoA will take a hit on approval so getting your apps in before that drops is a plus.... But that's just my method Smiley Happy....

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, that all makes sense and aligns with my thinking. Was just slightly spooked by all the talk of Chase closing accounts if too many were opened in a short period of time. Not sure that 3 necessarily qualifies but that was the concern. Would you do Citi on the same day as well? Before the Chase apps? They're fairly inquiry sensitive as I understand it? Again, really appreciate the help!

Re: First post, chase and citi app advice.

Chase and Citi bank both pull Experian atleast in my area and judging by chases 5/24 rule I would say chase will be more sensitive... But honestly... If you apply for both chase cards and then the Citi... Citi will only see one new inquiry and that's not going to flag you for a manual review..... In my. Opinion you would need alot of Inquires and high utilization on your current accounts to get thier attention to that degree....... I would pull the trigger on Trigger on One freedom and if approved I would do the 2nd freedom and then the Citi.... If you try the first freedom and your denied I would apply for a chase slate card which has a lower threshold for approval and you can get you foot in the door and product change it later to a freedom ( but you will lose the sign up bonus on the freedom when product change)... And then at the point after being denied for the freedom the Citi is a more of a gamble and that's up to you........

Hoping that the Sapphire Reserve was enough to begin a relationship/get my foot in door. Would like to avoid going the pc route. Not in a rush, so would certainly prefer not to miss out on the sub. All good advice, thanks!

Welcome to MyFICO

Unfortunately you can not have 2 Freedom cards at once (other than via product change).  Chase implemented new rules several months ago that prevent you from being approved for 2 or more cards in the same ‘family’.  You can’t hsve both the CSR and CSP and you can’t be approved for the FU card if you already have the Freedom and vice versa.  If you applied for both at the same time, one would be rejected if you are approved for the other.  If you managed to slip thru both applications and be approved, Chase would subsequently cancel one of them.

Ah, ok. Thanks so much, had no idea!! It's a bit of a bummer but probably simplifies things for me. When exactly did that go into effect, do you know? I was aware of this for CSR and CSP, but there are articles from sources like thepointsguy dated as recently as July of this year stating that both Freedom cards were still doable.

Re: First post, chase and citi app advice.

I believe getting 2 of the same family cards for Chase was closed as Irish80 stated. Unless you have had a Freedom from before or had it PC'd, it's usually a no-go. On that note, the Chase FU is a decent 1.5% card, the Freedom has quarterly categories. I would recommend going for the Chase FU and getting a Discover IT card. That way, you can use the quarterly categories for Disco and everything else for the Chase FU. Ideally, since you already have the CSR, why would you want to get lower-tier cards like the Freedom or FU? You'll accumulate points on the CSR faster.

On travel and dining, for sure, but on all other spending I'd be better off using one of the Freedoms. At least that's my understanding? Just trying to maximize potential UR point earning.
