Fraud Alert and Pre-Approvals

Does anyone have any experience with having a fraud alert on your file and not getting any pre-approvals, specifically with AMEX?

My file has improved significantly in the last few months with no baddies. I have a pretty thick file with the AAoA sitting around 3 years. Two new accounts in the last 12 months and I still get no preapproval offers on AMEX. I see other post on here with similar DP or even worse DP getting pre approvals and eventually approvals. I have around 8 inquires in the last 13 months but 6 of those are from an auto dealership shotgunning my auto application. Although, it counts as one it is still showing all of them on my EX file. Also, I have no history with Amex so I shouldn't be blacklisted.

I am curious to know if a fraud alert would impact my preapproval offers?

No, it would not. It would require verification after application but it plays no role in pre-approvals.

Re: Fraud Alert and Pre-Approvals

First, I am an Amex cardholder, so I'm not sure how that might make your experience different.

When I go on the Amex site and log in, sometimes a pre-approval will pop up and sometimes it won't. However, if I hit the "apply" button, one of two messages have popped up in the past. The first is "it's easy to apply etc." That's not so good, but you still might be approved. If you're not an account holder, it will cost you a HP to find out.

The second message is "You're Pre-approved! Get a decision in 30 seconds." That's good news, but they haven't done a couple of things like checking their Blacklist, so no guarantees. In my case, on the site there's a button that says "check for pre-approvals." Pressing that doesn't bring up anything, even right after I signed in and it splashed how I was pre-approved for another card. Yet, when I check using the steps outlined above, I'm pre-approved for everything.

Go figure.

1. Not necessarily, as a current cardholder, new apps are generally SPs. Not always, but usually.

2. If you were on Amex's blacklist, they wouldn't have given you even one card. If you're in already, you're no longer on any blacklist. That said, you're right there's no guarantees either way.

I read OP's post that he was not an Amex member, but looking at it again perhaps he is.

Re: Fraud Alert and Pre-Approvals

I have a fraud alert on my credit and sometimes preapprovals will show for cards that I currently have business with.

like discover , capital one and NFCU. Sometimes they don't show.

other cards from businesses I don't have any business with don't show preapprovals for me.    I'm still in the rebuilding stage though.

Low 700 across all three bureaus. 3 derogs showing for a few more years.

While I'd say yes your file looks good at this point with decent scores if they are FICO I'd also say that 3 years AAoA and the few low limit cards you have actually isn't a "pretty thick file" at all in a creditors view, but it certainly is headed in a good direction with good history for sure. With that said you don't have to be Pre-Approved to apply for an AmEx card if you're willing to take a HP (which you're going to get anyway if approved even via Pre-Approval). People get AmEx approved every day that aren't Pre-Approved. While you didn't mention salary which plays into AmEx like any other issuer, assuming you have a decent income and based on the few DP's you did list and as they will pull EX and you have a good score there, I'd say you'd have a decent shot at approval cold apping for at least the Gold card (and maybe your wanted Goal card the Platinum). Of course NONE of us can say for sure but of my 6 AmEx cards only 2 of them were Pre-Approved, the others were cold apped and approved. Personally I'd say go for it and good luck!

Thanks for the feedback! I have considered just submitting a cold app but the number of inquiries showing on my file freaks me out.

My understanding of a thick vs thin file doesn't have to do with the age of accounts but more to do with the different types of accounts you currently have (installment, revolving, etc.). Young vs Marure is more to do with the AAoA and I figured my 3 year AAoA is on the younger side for sure but wouldn't be too young to get a pre approval. Is that not accurate?

Salary is between 70-90k depending on bonuses and my DTI is pretty low (not sure of exact %).

No, I don't think the 3 years AAoA is affecting the Pre-Approval and not sure what is, but that's just AX sometimes. Like I said I've gotten several instant approvals on cards I wasn't pre-approved for. In full disclosure I was P-A for both my Gold and Platinum cards. But I wasn't for my Green or any of the AX credit cards I have. In my view and having a lot of history with AmEx including having been on their Blacklist lol, I think your DP's and now salary as stated work in your favor for a cold app approval, BUT of course and again none of us can say for sure so take my advice as that advice lol. With that said and as long as your file is clean with no BK (or no BK with 5.1 years) and no lates or collections I just don't see them saying no really, at least on the Green or Gold card or a Credit card with them.  Maybe the Platinum too, IDK. I understand about HP's and INQ so that's a decision only you can make. I'm in the garden but all my INQ currently sit at 10/24, 6/12 on all 3 CRA's and I personally wouldn't let that stop me from applying.
